So, as the NH campaign gets set to set up a gear the question must be asked - Who is set for an excellent season??? Who will excel in term 2021/22??? Who will be the winners when the awards are handing out???

Trainers - To say that Lieutenant Henderson will do well is Unoriginal with a capital 'U' and as obvious as saying night follows day so I won't dwell on him. Apart from saying he's refreshed and restocked (the stables not the GnT cabinet) and the old boy wants HIS championship back. And I jolly well think he will get it, team. A pair of less obvious trainers I expect to do well this season are Tom 'Fast Pacey' Lacey and Stuart Edmunds. Both, in my opinion, will step up several levels. Meanwhile 2 trainers who have stalled somewhat in the past couple of seasons, Harry Fry and Ben Pauling, really in my opinion need a decent term if they are ever going to reach the very, very top.

Jockeys - No real views here apart from David Bass who will be looking for another decent campaign to back up last seasons breakthrough year. Did wonder if he'd get a top job over the summer. He didn't but another stellar season will make his 'shout' for one very hard for 'top table' connections to ignore at the end of 2021/22.

Owners - I would hope that forum luminaries such as Mr Waley-Cohen, Princess Camilla and Chips, the Devizes crew, the 11th richest man in Wales, Rich Richtea, the heir to the buscuit tin fortune and, of course, Mr Ponsonby excel in 2021/22.

Horses - Firstly, was disappointed and saddened to see Happygolucky ruled out for the season. He would have been my staying chaser to follow. Hopefully though he will return in 2022/23 in the very best of health. The top horse for me has to be Jonbon. This brother to Douvan looked simply brilliant when winning a Bumper, at Newbury, in March and I think he will prove top class. In the novice hurdling ranks I also like Kilcruit. Looked some prospect in 4 bumpers last season and should be even more effective when facing obstacles. Very exciting. My fave horse these past couple of campaigns has been Chacun Pour Soi and, in that time, he's secured 4 Grade 1's. He didn't add to this tally last term at the Cheltenham Festival but I haven't given up on him winning a Champion Chase. Expect him to secure more Grade 1's elsewhere, as well, in 2021/22. Away from the 'top table' am looking forward to seeing Fishcake (Monkfish's little half-sister) debut for The Lieutenant and am intrigued to see how the association between the Board boys pal, Fergal O'Brien, and the Devizes crew gets on. They team up with Carlo Du Bearlais who actually cost a fair bit, team. Meanwhile, can't wait to see Benaud (peak rated 103 on Flat) when young Joseph debuts him in juvenile hurdles.

So they are my lists for 2021/22. Anyone agree / disagree or care to add names of their own???

Depends on what you mean by having a big season.

    Trainers

Nicholls and Henderson will win the big races before the Irish come over and dominate the festival, I think they will have a few tussles with the newer guard of trainers, but generally they have the classier horses that are established and will dominate the big Grade 1 races. Mullins, HDB and the man with no name will dominate the festival, they have the best horses and they don't punch holes in their horses to cure "breathing" issues. They also have the added benefit of being able to get rid of crap horses easier (Irish racing doesn't see horses as pets and keep useless ones in training despite it costing 2k a month), all of whom will either vanish into the ether or end up at Ben Haslams or Paul Nicholls yards!!

I think we will continue to see a march by good old Fergal, who should have another good season, and I do hope he has a very good one in the yard. I also expect to see continued good form from Milton Harris, Toby Lawes and Rebecca Menzies. Perhaps we might even see a renaissance from Rebecca Curtis and when it comes up hock deep Venetia Williams.

A word also for Stuart Edmunds, Chris Honour and Michael Scudamore who all should have a good year.

On the other hand, I am expecting to see the same old ****e from Olly Murphy, a regression to the mean by Kim Bailey and for Tizzard jnr to find out that his dad was actually running cows rather than horses last season.

    Jockeys

Paddy Brennan is gunning for a great year, I think he is close to retirement and I think he is so driven to be successful this year. Watch out when he rides for outside yards! Out of the other old guard (sorry Pad) I don't see many that look to have a great year, so hopefully it will be the season of the younger jockeys, and I think Liam Harrison will continue to develop strongly under the tutelage of the aforementioned.

However I think jockeys such as Jack Tudor, Nick Scholfield and Jonjo Jnr will continue in good form. The amount of good conditionals around is very taking though, and I expect Brogan to take some big rides in the big handicaps.

    Owners

    FOB partnership number 9.

    Horses

All the big festival winners, but that is obvious enough. I really hope Silver Hallmark makes the grade (1) for Fergal, he is a lovely horse and they've been very patient with him. I also really like Bravemansgame for novice chasing, I am hopeful that we will see a stronger and better version of him this season.

At lower levels, I think there are plenty of well handicapped horses at yards like the Tizzards, so finding horses with potential will be the key to the season for betting purposes. We hope we have one, but we will see soon enough.

That moniker 'the man with no name' is excellent. Think I might pinch that and use it in the future.

Re Bravemansgame will they really be debuting him in that hot looking heat at God's own racecourse on Sunday?!? Potentially, that could be some race if they all stand their ground.

Not declared. Sunday at Newton Abbott seems likely starter for him.

On the training front I hope Dan Skelton can continue to progress, I've always liked the way he's gone about his business. Also keen to see the lovely ladies Emma Lavelle and Rebecca Curtis being regularly interviewed in the winners enclosure.

I can't say I have a favourite jockey but obviously I hope Harry Skelton can get plenty of winners for his brother and I hope we see plenty of Bryony Frost on camera too - a real breath of fresh air listening to her.

As for owners - hopefully the smaller owners will have their share of success and keep interest in the sport. Also I hope the number of ownership syndicates will continue to grow. It will be a poor outlook for the sport if big, powerful owners continue to mop up all the top races.

Some horses I am looking forward to see are My Drogo, Royale Pagaille (and Espoir De Romay, closely tied to Royale Pagaille on form), Thyme Hill and one from left field Nuts Well who ran a fine 2nd in the Melling Chase and has already opened his account for the season by winning the Class 2 Simply Ned Handicap Chase off a mark of 157 the other day. He won that same race last year and then followed up in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree and is likely to follow the same route this season before being put away over the winter.

Good morning, Sir Barney. Interesting that you highlight Benaud's 103 rating, as though it's a bit special.
It seems light years ago that good flat horses went over hurdles.
I remember a Classic winner going over hurdles as a nine year old. Do you remember which one that was?
Also, a horse that won the Newbury Spring Cup and ran third in the Irish Guineas- whose trainer Wallington said it would have won the Champion Hurdle(finished fourth) if the race had been run a couple of weeks later when it 'came to hand.' Do you remember that one?
There again, the National Hunt season used to be about seven months long, not just a few days at Cheltenham.
Jockeys wise, I expect Jonjo Junior to ride more for J.P McManus and possibly be appointed stable jockey sometime, maybe just this side of the water.
I hope Davy Russell carries on a bit longer. He's a master in large handicap fields- and a great character.

Sir Eric was the last one that I can name that had such a lofty career mark and was very lightly raced on the flat before going hurdling. He had such a profile going into Cheltenham but he was sadly lost that day and I think that was one of the worst points in jumps racing in the last few years. Well on a racecourse that is.

Would agree with these 2 as ‘under the radar’ types to progress. Lacey’s Tea Clipper won a decent listed race well yesterday on his fence debut. The 2nd and 3rd had plenty more experience and mid 140s ratings based on multiple wins. As a regular reader of Lacey’s blog I’d say one of the biggest dangers to him is his head exploding. There seems to be lot going on in the modern world which massively irritates him. Grumpy ol bastard.
Christian Williams is another who should have a good season. If there’s any justice the admirable Kittys Light will scoop a big pot for him somewhere along the way.

Aurelius, I'd guess Tamerlo. Fired blanks as a stallion so went back into training.

As well as My Drogo coming through as a real force this year I'm expecting 'Buzz' Chuckles' favourite trainer will bring joy to HM in the shape of the novice Kincardine. Probably more one for 2022-3.

Yes, Bustino. He went back into training over hurdles with Ken Cundell and ran second in the Champion Hurdle as a nine year old. I think he ran in a chase or two as well.
I particularly remember both him and the other horse I mentioned-Mon Plaisir - who loved soft ground but never came to hand until April.

Remember Kribensis? Owned by Sheikh Mohammed and trained by Michael Stoute he carried the famous maroon and white silks to Triumph Hurdle glory in 1988 and added the Gerry Feilden and Christmas Hurdles later the same year. Well beaten behind Beech Road in the 1989 Champion Hurdle he roared back the next season to win the Fighting Fifth, Christmas Hurdle, Kingwell Hurdle and Champion Hurdle. Three of those four victories had "firm" in the going description and this would never be possible these days with current watering practices.

Yes, Kribensis, one of only three horses to win the Triumph and Champion.

Kribensis thought he was in the QMCC judging by the leap at the last. Jumped 2 hurdles.
