Everyday made a very ordinary debut at Chelmsford 9 days ago. Stepping up to what seemed a hottish maiden at Newbury he ran a fine race finishing better than any other placed horse to finish 3rd at 50-1. He came up against a smart one in Koy Koy but given a sympathetic ride by Levey showed he was fully capable of emulating his 5 winning brothers. Next time out? Possibly, but looks a reasonable 7-9f colt for this year and next.

Got Saga wrong, but in his place the surprising 5 day declaration for the Royal Lodge was twice-raced maiden Educator. At the same time he's also entered for a Haydock Novice event the same day.
Also surprisingly the improved Everyday is also entered for the same Haydock race just 7 days after his better run at Newbury.
Finally Charlton has declared his second Royal 2yo filly, Discretion, in an earlier race at Haydock. As his other Royal 2yo won first-time-out it will be instructive if this one starts and who is set to ride him.

Unfortunately Mellow Yellow finished on three legs having broken a bone. Hopefully she'll recover.

As with Fresh Fancy Charlton is keeping everyone guessing with Discretion. Withdrawn from Saturday's Haydock race she is now entered for a race at Nottingham next Wednesday. Entered in the same race is Clive Cox's first Royal runner Yarralumla who you won't be surprised to hear is by Australia.

As expected Educator swerves a meeting with Masekela in the Royal Lodge and switches to a maiden at Haydock. on the same day with Fallon in the plate,

The 32nd winner with Educator's neck victory at Haydock and of course another 2yo winner. Looks a lazy colt who got a strong, mainly hands and heels ride, from Fallon (he got 3 thwacks). Will he run again this year? Must admit after his 2nd race I thought the Zetland might be a reasonable target, and that may still be the case. However could be retired for the season with the hope he'll grow up over the winter.

New Royal Trainer Clive Cox has his first runner in the Royal colours with Yarralumla. This half-sister to debut winning Frontispiece will hopefully do him proud (notice he's been backed heavily today).

In a later race Wink of an Eye tries to resume his winning ways.

It looks as if the handicapper has the measure of wink of an Eye. Maybe time for the sales? I'm sure they'd get a reasonable price. His stablemate, Chalk Stream, whom I considered behind him, now looks the better option and goes for his first (listed) Stakes race on Friday.

Having won the first division of the fillies maiden at Nottingham with a 12-1 shot, Clive Cox must have been quite hopeful for Yarralumla in the 2nd Division (she eventually started at 100/30 favourite). She started slowly and had to be hunted up by Crouch. In fact that set the scene for her race as she seemed to run in snatches. I'm sure she learnt a lot.

Tomorrow Discretion finally runs at Salisbury and with Kingscote booked I'd expect her to make a decent showing. Everyday makes his third start but is unfortunate to be facing the highly promising Waness.

Quite a few Royal runners are entered over the next few days. Most interesting are Tactical's brother, Tack, at Newmarket on Saturday and Light Refrain's half-sister Distant Light (by Fastnet Rock) entered by Balding at Newmarket and Kempton in the coming 5 days. It's instructive that though Group 3 winner Light Refrain (by Frankel) just about gets 6f her half-sister is set to start at 7f (or actually further). Dukedom is being entered again. He looked a weak horse on his 2nd start in July and probably needed to do some growing-up. Hopefully he's strengthened and can give a better account of himself when he does run.

Pied Piper gives the Queen her 33rd winner of the year, obviously relishing the heavy ground at Leicester today. His only win as a 2yo was at Newmarket on very heavy going nearly 12 months ago. He may be able to win again before being dispatched to the HiT Sales at the end of the month.

Unlikely to get a double today when Distant Light makes her debut at Kempton this evening. Looks as if she's there for the experience (from her current price).

Despite finishing nearer last than first I thought Distant Light's debut was very promising. She was 'in the van' much of the way and looked a real contender 2f out. Her run then petered out and she weakened. Murphy gave her a gentle ride. A filly who looks as if she has some filling out to do, we may not see her again this year. But there are a few maidens in the coming weeks at Newbury or Newmarket she could be aimed at.

Clive Cox has wasted no time in getting his second 2yo filly out. This is Silver Screen who's by Lope de Vega out of an Oasis Dream sister to Oaks 2nd Flight of Fancy. So far the mare has had 3 foals in training, 2 to have raced but only one to have won and that's the Camelot gelding Realist who won a small race early this year (also won a hurdle since being sold). So a positive run from this well-bred filly would be a bonus. She is entered at Newmarket tomorrow.

Balding has now entered his 3rd of 4 Royal 2yos in Duty Bound. A colt by Kingman out of Key Point (who's a half-sister to Kalanisi), he's a half-brother to Punctuation (by Dansili) who looked promising at one stage. One factor in Duty Bound's favour is that Key Point was sent back Kingman when Duty Bound was a yearling: usually a sign that they liked the result of that mating. He's entered at Nottingham next week.

One conundrum amongst the Royal 2yos is Clear Day. First entered in mid-July, and several times since, he's entered twice next week at Leicester and Nottingham. Hopefully he'll run one day.

Stoute is yet to have a 2yo entered. Of the three Royal 2yos he had, one has been taken out of training: usually a sign that they've been injured or are proving too backward. That it is Estimate's 4th foal, Transpire (by Frankel) is really disappointing.

Clear Day finally runs tomorrow at Nottingham. Tudhope is in the saddle for Haggas's colt . Duty Bound is partnered by Hayley Turner in the first division of this maiden. Coincidentally she rode this colt's half-brother Punctuation on his debut and nearly pulled off a win at 33-1. Duty Bound is unlikely to start at that price.
On Friday Dukedom drops to Nursery class for the first time. I'm sure this colt has ability but is a bit weak. The booking of Buick could be significant.

Re Fresh Fancy I see that Mr Charlton has pulled her out of Yarmouth on Tuesday. I wonder if it will be the same as her debut appearance??? Him withdrawing the filly from several races before actually running her??? Still that policy worked before.

There is a Listed race at Newbury on Saturday they could consider if they are really going ambitious for Fresh Fancy. Black type and all that. In fact the stable won it last year. Entries for that race will be made tomorrow.

Charlton tends to favour that race (Radley Stakes) and won it last year. She could well go for it and if she does would show he rates her.

Yarralumla looked very green when 3rd today but only beaten by what looked like 2 useful types. She may still run this year and win or be kept for a maiden next Spring. Distant Light not very good at all.

Educator needs to win at Newmarket tomorrow if he's going to have any career next season.

    Educator did not run

Chalk Stream has been withdrawn for the HiT sales but Wink of an Eye will be sold. Could go for a reasonable price. Unsurprisingly Evaluation is being sold but Just Fine escapes going under the hammer (from Stoute). Hughes's Tynwald will also be sold.

At this late stage Michael Bell has received a further 2yo filly, Gold Belt, who's by Golden Horn out of the Sadler's Wells mare Hypoteneuse. The best produce of this mare so far has been Sextant, though Math's Prize wasn't bad.

Wink of an Eye makes 230,000gns (won £35,000 this season) so a worthy return. Inveigle made 75,000 and Evaluation 30,000. The surprise sell was Everyday, who went for 12,000 while Tynwald went for 23,000. The money earned will go some way towards a few decent sires or the purchase of a mare from the Shadwell draft in December.

The Royal Stud has 10 fillies and mares going to those same December Sales. At this point the disappointment is that Pack Together is being sold. She is one of only 2 Feola mares remaining in the stud. Pack Together has been disappointing so far and will leave no daughter. Her close relative Good Hope has had 3 foals, two of which have won. She, at least, has yearling (Cable Bay) and foal (Saxon Warrior) fillies. More later.

The Queen trousers another 225,000gns as Gosden's Pied Piper is sold to go hurdling with that nice man Gordon Elliott.

I mentioned the possibility of The Royal Stud purchasing a 'Height of Fashion' mare from the December mares sale but another possibility is to buy a yearling filly from the Yearling Sale. There are two listed:-
Lot 136 an Invincible Spirit filly out of a Dansili mare, whose 4th dam was HoF.
Lot 198 a Teofilo filly out of a Dubawi mare, again whose 4th dam was HoF.

If money was no object 136 would be the choice.
