Swansea City v West Bromwich Albion

    Competition - Sky Bet Championship
    Venue - Swansea.com stadium
    Date - 20 October 2021
    Kick off - 19.45

Following their comprehensive 3-0 home win over Cardiff in the South Wales derby, next up for Russell Martin’s Swansea squad is a home game against promotion hopefuls West Brom.

On Sunday, in front of a vociferous home crowd. Jamie Paterson inspired the Swans to a thumping victory over their South Wales rivals to pile the pressure on Cardiff boss Mick McCarthy.

Paterson put Swansea ahead with one of the most memorable goals in the recent history of this fixture, smashing home a shot from 25 yards.

He then laid on goals for Joel Piroe and Jake Bidwell to secure Russell Martin's biggest result as Swans boss.

But it is now six straight defeats for the ailing Bluebirds.

The latest reverse - and the nature of it - is only likely to add to speculation about McCarthy's future at Cardiff, who are just three points clear of the Championship relegation zone in 20th.

Swansea climb to 17th courtesy of only a third league win since Martin took charge in early August.

On Friday evening, Karlan Grant scored the only goal of the game as West Brom ground out a West Midlands derby win over Birmingham City.

Grant's powerful 75th-minute strike was enough for the Baggies to replace Bournemouth at the top of the table on goal difference, although it was short lived as Bournemouth’s 2-0 win at Bristol City on Saturday enabled the Cherries to reclaim top spot.

The first West Midlands derby to be played in front of a crowd since the Covid-19 pandemic generated a tremendous atmosphere inside The Hawthorns - but it quickly evaporated as the hosts struggled against a well-marshalled, rejigged Blues defence.

However, it took the game's one moment of genuine individual brilliance from Grant - the Albion striker's fifth goal in as many games - to settle it.

The Swans have played WBA on 45 previous occasions, winning 18, losing 17 and drawing 10.

Arguably, the most memorable match between the teams took place in November 2012, when the Swans, under Michael Laudrup, produced - particularly in the first half - one of the finest performances in the club’s history:

Turning to Wednesday evening, West Brom have the advantage of having played their last match 2 days earlier than the Swans.

However, the Swans could well still be ‘on a high’ after beating Cardiff and should be up for the challenge.

The Swans have had 7 clean sheets so far this season - the highest in the Championship - and I’m hopeful that they can record another.

However, West Brom have only conceded 9 goals (behind the 8 conceded by both Bournemouth and Derby), so will the Swans be able to break down that mean defence?

    As such, I’m going for a 0-0 draw. <cheers>

I'm not sure how much I learned from the demolition of Cardiff really. They were so awful, the worst side I've seen play against us in a long while, that I don't actually know if we were any better than in the other games we've played this season. I'd hope our performance made Cardiff look that bad, but I'm just not sure.

I think WBA will be favourites to win - maybe 0-2, but I hope we've got our tails up and will get the win. I think I'd be content with us showing that the Cardiff match was no flash in the pan.

Thanks Taff. It will be difficult after the high of Sunday but I am hopeful we can take a point on Wednesday so it's 1-1 for me.

Thank you Taff. We can win again if the players can match their efforts from Sunday...2-1

As Taff stated the players will still be on a high after yesterdays total demolition nay annihilation of our noisy neighbours which will help but we'll need more that just hwyl to win this one , we're more than capable of matching them and I'm sure we will no knocks and still with options on the bench being equal to the task then I'm going for a cheeky 2-1

I can see what Martin's trying to do and it's slowly taking shape. I think we can ride the high and use the confidence to get a result. If we can not do something sloppy at the back I'm going for a 1 - 0.

We do seem to be on the up now so I shall go for a slightly optimistic 1-0 win, although I can see Taff's logic for the 0-0 draw given that neither side concedes much.

Tonight's game will be the real test as to how good we are. Just watched the Cardiff game and they were awful. We could have played Steve Potter in goal, Wyndham Evans and Danny Bartley as full backs. Eddie May and Dave Bruton as centre backs and still won 3 - 0. Hoping for a 1-0 win tonight.

Philippine Swan obviously those players you refer to would be playing in teal time not back then as poor old CCFC would have probably had a cricket score against them....their fans are crying out for another change of manager but is it feasible that the owners cannot pay MM off......pity for them....

Simon Hooper will be the referee when Swansea City take on West Brom in the Championship on Wednesday at the Swansea.com Stadium (7.45pm).

The Swindon official is taking charge of a Swans fixture for the first time this season, though he has refereed four times this campaign in the Premier League, Championship, League Two and EFL Cup.

Hooper will be assisted by Daniel Robathan and Derek Eaton, while Lee Swabey will be the fourth official.

It's the linesmen we have had problems with this season. That bloke on Sunday and the glaring offside miss at Fulham are examples from just our last few games

I would have thought so Taff unless there were some knocks from Sunday. Although as it was only 4 days ago he may not start Ntcham
