Them conditions look just about as bad as ours did against Pompey. Imagine Premiership teams playing on a pitch like that? Why the feck are these games allowed to be played when its as bad as that. The games are just totally pointless, its a case of who deals with the pitch better. Also the risk of injury to players is very high. Everything about League 1 is a disgrace, from the standard of refereeing onwards
Saw this earlier and apparently there was a downpour prior to this goal, the conditions earlier in the game weren't this bad, but it is bonkers and dangerous to play in farse conditions like that.
Just a farce...no way would that or our game at Portsmouth been allowed to continue if it was a Premiership Fixture
Or even a Championship fixture. It just feels like teams at our level are disregarded and postponing or abandoning it would just be an inconvenience to the EFL. Our rearranged game against Man Utd U23s just sums up how little teams like us are thought of.
Ive just watched the highlights. Judging by them it didnt get that bad until right at the end. Ref should have still took the players off before that goal like. The result would have still stood Im led to believe.
Going off our game against Pompey, the only way a game will be called off from League 1 and below is if theres an Earthquake in the middle of the pitch.
I remember matches at Roker in the early 60's being played in conditions like that....sometimes rain or snow all over and still falling,....orange ball. Ok,so slick football is impossible, but it's the same for both teams....you need to adapt to the conditions.......get on with it.
That is ridiculous, and frankly stupid. Grassroots games would have been stopped, Prem games would have been stopped. It does seem as though League 1 is a wasteland when it comes to common sense for matchday officials.
Prem games would have been stopped because the pampered millionaires would have been worried about their knickers getting wet and marking the seats in their Bentleys on the way home. I played junior football in Consett as a lad.....with a water-absorbant casey......we met conditions like that much of the time and carried on playing. Get on with it and adapt. ****ing soft ****es! Sometimes these players have to put their backs into it,get a little wet, deal with the conditions and earn their money! This is Britain.....it can happen once in a while....you want to reap the benefits of playing here.....deal with it.
Well said mate. Too many snowflakes about nowadays. If I'd travelled to Pompey and game got called off just before KO I wouldn't have been too happy!!
Would you have said that if Stewart or Neil picked up a serious injury against Pompey due to the conditions? It has nothing to do with players manning up really its making sure that games like this and ours dont have a detrimental effect on the final league table because its not even a proper football match its a total farce. There's no way we'd have got hammered off Portsmouth, im not saying wed have won but the scoreline would have been alot different. Playing a game when the ball stops 1 metre in front of a player no matter how hard he kicks it is not acceptable at all in professional football when the stakes are so high for teams in either getting promoted are avoiding relegation.
Sorry mate, but is bollocks....just a load of "what ifs.". Would you be saying the same on a blisteringly hot August day when the ball was bouncing 20 feet in the air,a gale force blowing the ball 20 metres back from where it was kicked and the pitch was rock hard? Same for both teams. It has everything to do with players manning up and everyone accepting that playing conditions are outside everyone's control and players have to adapt to them and take the rough with the smooth. We don't live in the ****ing Caribbean. We've had to take the Portsmouth match on the chin....if we're clever,we'll learn from it and deal with it better next time. If we don't go up by a goal difference of -4,people will say it's that match.....when the reality will be it's over a whole season, not just one isolated incident. 46 matches man, conditions will vary...sometimes to extreme.
Aye I mean I used to play tennis on icy courts and apart from occasionally doing the splits that was fine and I enjoyed it. I wouldn't expect Djokovic to put up with it though in a competitive tournament and if it's too dangerous for the world number 1 it's too dangerous for the world number 1000.
Sorry mate your not going to change my mind and convince me that playing on a pitch like ours against Pompey and the one above is acceptable. Its completely different to adapting to high winds. Pitches are watered before games on a red hot Summers day to prevent what youve mentioned about the ball bouncing 20ft in the air.
Yes,I was only trying to present a different set of climactic conditions which would cause normal playing to become difficult. We'll agree to differ.
Professional football shouldnt be played in conditions like that. A players livelihood is at stake. Imagine a 19 year old getting a career ending injury in conditions like that. A pub or Sunday League match fair enough, many players would love it, entertaining for the locals who havnt had to pay to watch, and if somebody gets a nasty injury they'll be in the pub come Saturday, leg up on chair, in plaster, going into the gory details laughing about it. But a young professional footballers life would come crashing down. And, for example, how would Man City feel if Doyle happened to be one of those players?
