It strikes me that this thread is a little bit like the current political situation in microcosm. The left try to create an echo chamber, a little world in which they're always right, blocking out (or using the ignore button on) any dissenting voices. While the right bluster ever on, repeating similar arguments, getting ever more frustrated that the left won't listen. And so, the two sides get ever further apart not realising that they have more in common than they think (as other threads on social issues show).

    Just saying, like.

I admire her for some things. She’s what politics should have more of- struggled, working class, single mum, not gone through a politics and economics degree or private school route. Unfortunately I agree that she says and does some daft things. Slogans etc that aren’t good with critical analysis. I still say she deserves some respect she just needs to also show a bit more at times. Not keen on the ‘all Tories being scum’ thing (though a few probably are).

There’s a poster on here who said all Somali’s are bred evil or words to that effect. Then denied it was racist because he had an ethnic minority wife. It got me thinking about it last Friday after the events in Southend and what he might be saying. Thankfully I blocked him. I suspect he’s one of the two getting stuck in to the thread cos I only have two blocked. Not because I disagree, that’s healthy - I disagree with a few on here but can see they aren’t just deliberately obnoxious or numb but because I don’t want to give air to racists or people with extremist views I’ve blocked some. I think it’s an interesting thread but I’ve not seen the recent madness cos it’s invisible to me.

There aren't just two sides to the argument imo.

I always want the party, in power, to do a great job and can't understand why anyone would think differently.

I also can't see the point in blaming a weak opposition for the mistakes of the government, especially one with a big majority. I'm not too interested in what Labour are saying because it's just talk.

Nor do I find it 'political' to criticise the incumbent government, they're the ones in charge ...

.... this one isn't too impressive imo.

I know you don’t like looking back, but can you imagine how bad the last Labour government must have been to get kicked out when there had been no Brexit or Pandemic, and one reason schools and universities teach history is so you don’t make the same mistakes you made before, and it seems choosing Labour is one of the biggest ever.

My uncle, a sailor from a long and indistinguished line of sailors, has had wives of all shapes and sizes, of every colour imaginable, from every corner of the globe.

Most racist bloke I know by the dictionary definition of racism.

This government has been in power long enough to have made a real difference, I just don't see one.

The handling of Covid was hailed as world class, huge success, etc, but it's really not.

Things are getting worse and no doubt the public will be blamed again as they've been before.

I just find all the bluster and boasting condescending tbh.

I think I broadly agree with you on most of those points.

What I find fascinating though is the clear need for confirmation bias, as expressed through which posts certain posters will like, the links/media that are posted to reinforce points, and who has who on ignore. Like you say, there aren't two sides to the argument- people's political views are a spectrum and that is clearly demonstrated on other threads where people express leanings that wouldn't be in keeping with the standpoint they claim on this thread.

How long were the last government in power did they not have enough time to put everything right without having Brexit and a pandemic to deal with?

My point, that I keep making, is that I don't see it as a competition in the way you do ...

... I want the current government to give us all a better present and future, not in comparison to how things have been in the past.

The past is behind us and, anyone with children and grandchildren, would want change now.

But you continually have a go at the Tories but you put forward no alternative so what actual point are you trying to make. I don’t see many arguing with what you are saying so you are basically arguing with yourself if you can do nothing about it.

Do film critics write their 500 word article followed by a 120 page script as a suggestion as to what would have been better?

No. Not being able to do something doesn't stop you from criticising it or its effects on you. Hence the saying, "everyone's a critic."
