As the crisp autumn breeze stirs the colourful foliage and leaves flutter to the ground, today marks the changing of the horse racing seasons. Yes, ITV will still bother us with that transatlantic tripe from Del Mar and the November handicap over the next few weeks, but the National Hunt season is now starting to ramp up as the flat draws to a close. With Cheltenham today, Aintree tomorrow and the first Grade 1 of the season just a week away at Down Royal (with half of the 10 entries rated 160+) the jumps season is having a yawn and a stretch and limbering up for action :)

At Cheltenham, last year's Ladbrokes (Hennessy) Trophy winner Cloth Cap makes his seasonal reappearance off top weight and a rating of 156. This may be a pipe-opener though, with Newbury and Aintree likely his bigger targets this season. I'm sure no one would begrudge Trevor Hemmings a posthumous winner though. The Hollow Ginge has gone well fresh in the past and is dropped another 3lbs into workable territory - yard also in good form at the moment.

The 4 year old hurdle has lost some of its interest with Zanahiyr staying at home but still looks an interesting contest with Tritonic trying to give weight to two decent animals. Although Tritonic had Stepney Causeway well beaten at Ascot last season, the latter has since strung together a 5-timer and looks well worth his 137 rating. That puts him well in the mix in receipt of 8lbs from Tritonic and they are pretty much co-favs this morning. A very close call and a race to watch and enjoy, rather than betting on.

The concluding bumper looks typically competitive and boasts some well know winners down the years - Imperial Commander in 2006 and subsequent Champion Bumper winner Moon Racer in 2014. The last 2 runnings have been won by Nicky Henderson and the 2 before that by Fergal O'Brien so their runners warrant respect. I know the Bumper King @stick likes the chances of Ocean Of Mercy and the Irish raider is just about favourite this morning. One I like at a bigger price is Fergal O'Brien's Westerner filly Bonttay, who overcame significant greenness at Market Rasen to win readily. 18/1 freely available and that represents a decent e/w prospect IMHO.

    Best of luck everyone <cheers>

A day for volume of bets but not high stakes at Cheltenham.

1:45 - Nordic Combined, Ingleby Hollow & Sarasota Star were the three I wanted to be with against the jolly. Minefield.
2:20 - Agree with Oddy on this. Cloth Cap would be an amazing winner and I think he has the talent to win off 156 against this solid but not spectacular field. I also like The Hollow Ginge, who has the double ginge factor today with Sam taking the ride. This could be run at a very fast pace and could come down to pure staying ability. If it does then Cloth Cap can defy the weight.
2:55 - I am working on the proviso that juvenile hurdle form in the UK is poor, so I am taking on Stepney Causeway and Tritonic with the bumper horse I Like To Move It. I also think the outside of the bunch won't run too badly either.
3:30 - Voix Du Reve - backed this one each way. I thought on a few occasions that this horse was capable of winning a good handicap. I don't see why he can't run well.
4:05 - Minefield again, but the two I like are Born Patriot and Havana Hermano at a price. Born Patriot might be the good thing in a handicap today. HH is just a horse that I like and think is majorly overpriced.
4:40 Roi De Dubai - Makes all, puts the jumping of the less experienced novices under pressure. Wins nicely. Here is hoping.
5:15 Time for a Gin. Or maybe Jeremy The Jinn. A horse the yard really like, hopefully he shows teh same ability as he did on debut.

    16:50 Newbury - Jean Baptiste

(Might surprise on this very soft ground. Thore Hammer Hansen on board for the George Boughey yard. 10/1 best price and readily-available at time of writing. e/w probably best option?)

Have a good day and enjoy Cheltenham! :emoticon-0167-beer:

Was it that impressive? If it was I'd keep an eye on Hannibal Barca who was very green and one of the first under pressure.

At the same time Luxembourg has a bit of growing up to do. There does seem a dearth of staying 2yos this year as nearly all the top 2yos are milers. He must be a great candidate for next year.

Wanted to flag up Undersupervision who looks a nice boat for the Twiston Davies yard. Big horse who had plenty of condition for his chase debut. Don’t think he was suited by how the race was run and he did try and go around again. I hope he will be running in one of the nationals in the coming years.

Are they relatively new owners to the yard? Seem to have a few nice beasts.

Yep, new to the sport as sole owners. The chap is a director of a financial services company (Courtiers). It’ll be interesting to see how many horses they have. As you say they have a couple of good ones already
