Another mediocre days racing in the UK with only the bumper looking interesting. Hope Feast wins, but I do think Turtle Said (formerly of FOB) is interesting for the futures too. comparing the fields with the Irish racing shows you everything you need to know about jumps racing in the UK at present. Absolutely mediocre.
He's doing well, isn't he, FOB. I see through Feast he's now got the Sullivan/Giles combo in the yard. Love the breeding on this one, incidentally. Feast that is not FOB. By Walk in the Park and our very own Lieutenant trained the dam to win 2 races (bumper and a hurdle).
Yep, doing very well and getting new owners with more cash than us mere syndicates. They had a mare from Ireland for Sullivan last season and they have sent a couple of unraced ones his way this season. I just hope they turn out to be decent as it’s one way of them improving the quality in the yard.
Anyone read the Kevin Blake write up on the ATR web pages about the National Hunt Scene...?? Makes a good read... Kevin Blake ATR
14:15 Sedgefield - Grand Enterprise (As Nassau said, a mediocre day's racing in the UK, so, to let the cap fit, here's my usual mediocre selection! Actually, the gelding has a squeak in this event as the he's been running quite well recently. 6/1 seems to be the best price at time of writing, freely-available.)
There were plenty of mediocre horses on show at Punchestown too though Nass - the 1.00 and 1.35 had plenty of horses 66/1 or bigger who finished miles beaten. Then you had 3 low grade handicaps (0-106 and twice 80-95) and the other 3 races had single figure fields. With Southwell and Sedgefield both being "good" then field sizes are bound to be down. I think Mullins had originally entered Kilcruit at Punchestown today but pulled him before final decs because of the ground. Mark my words - in a few weeks time we'll have racing abandoned for waterlogged tracks
The Lieutenant has entered 14 (1-4) horses at Newbury on Friday. It will be fascinating to see how many are declared tomorrow morn! Guesses on a postcard to the usual address...
Thoughts on Epatante? Will she go to Newcastle? 7/2 this evening on Sceau Royal for the Fighting Fifth looks very generous, particularly given Monmiral is likely to go to Newbury.
If Epatante goes to Newcastle then I think she'll win. I'm a huge fan of Sceau Royal but don't forget he doesn't have to just beat Epatante he has to give the old girl 7 lbs and beat her. Admirable as he is I doubt he's capable of that. One curious point about Epatante though is why isn't Nico de Boinville allowed anywhere near her?!? The same owner, and his management team, are perfectly happy to have him aboard Champ and Chantry House so why not Epatante??? The Lieutenant has got another interesting one entered at Newcastle on Saturday namely the 6YO Valsheda. Have a good look atthis one if you get the chance. The owner hasn't dispatched this gelding to Polly Gundry, quite yet, and he could be very, very good over the big 'uns. Eyecatchingly if he goes to Newcastle the old boy would start his chasing career off a mark of just 122.
The answer is 6. Two pieces of joyous news though - (i) the radio station that plays non-stop Christmas records is back on the air, and (ii) the Newbury number includes Jonbon. Be excited, people, be very excited...
