Favourable draw for Wales in the semi as long as they keep Giggs away. Beat Austria and home against Scotland or Ukraine. again both beatable as long as we don’t play too cagily......
Austria had a poor qualifying campaign, finishing fourth in their group. Taking out their 4 wins against Moldova and the Faroe Islands they had 1W, 1D, 4L against Denmark, Scotland and Israel.
This is the best chance Wales have had to reach the WC finals for a long time....wasn’t the last time under Mark Hughes at the Principality against Russia in the second leg having had a no score draw out there....he played not to lose we conceded early doors game over.....hopefully RP will set up more positively getting the Red Wall very vociferous and being the twelfth man
I remember it well. We went out like a damp squib instead of going for it. A game we certainly could have won.
I was in Cardiff Arms Park / The National Stadium in November 1993 with my father and my son who was just 6 years old when we lost 2-1 to Romania: Southall let in a soft opening goal and Paul Bodin missed a penalty to put us 2-1 up …. Right at the end a flare was fired from near where we were sitting - I can still visibly recall it - and a Welsh supporter (John Hill) was killed by that flare on the opposite side of the pitch. The police came to our house to take a statement from my son - his seat was within the near boundary/range that the police wanted to speak to people. That team which included the likes of Giggs, Rush, Hughes, Saunders, Speed and Southall was good enough but ….. RIP John Hill
