I’m not surprised at all, but millions of people might be.
I spent 12 years as a newsagent, in the 70s/80s, and every morning, even then, I could see how different papers reported on the same event.
The media lies have become worse and increasingly blatant and won’t change until a government grows a set of cojones big enough to take them on, BUT they won’t because both sides (but predominantly the Tory party) benefit from the lies.
The media, in general, needs a massive overhaul with regards to decency and honesty and if I had the power to change it I would make some very simple changes.
I would make newspapers print apologies and retractions in the same way as they first reported any inaccuracies, so a front page headline, with a 2 page spread inside, would be how the apology and/or retraction would be reported, so that their readership actually know that they have been misled.
Currently they are getting away with hiding apologies and retractions deep in the paper, and in as few words as possible.
    Likewise for news programmes.
Political programmes, such as QT or Andrew Marr should have fact finders checking every statement, so that when someone like Javid tells Marr that “since 2015 we have taken in 25000 asylum seekers, which is more than any other EU country” someone can interrupt with factual comments such as “since 2015 Germany took in 1 million asylum seekers”.
Too many people watch programmes like these, and listen to news reports where outrageous lies go unchallenged, and because they go unchallenged the viewer thinks there must be some truth in what was reported.
It has become too easy for MPs and the media to lie with impunity, which is so disheartening.

And more proof that you can’t trust the government.

Government has hit us with a shock legal bill in our challenge with Runnymede over their appointment of Conservative Peer Dido Harding and her ex-colleague Mike Coupe to run the disastrous Test and Trace programme - without open competition.

Legal action is expensive, so we don’t take it lightly. That’s why, back in March, we asked for Government’s costs estimate for defending this case. We said plainly and clearly that we were asking so we knew whether to apply for a costs cap (a Court order that would have ‘capped’ how much we’d have to pay Government if we don’t win). Government replied with reassurance that their costs ‘would be in the region of £35,000 to £50,000’ and, in reliance on that, we did not seek a costs cap.

A couple of months later, they wrote to say their expected costs would actually be closer to £150,000. While this was an alarming three times more than their initial estimate, it felt just about manageable so we pressed on.

But now, out of nowhere and with only weeks until our High Court hearing, they have increased their estimated costs again - to a whopping £360,000 - with a barely credible explanation. By way of comparison, our lawyers’ bill is estimated at £70,000 if we lose, and £175,000 if we win.

Government’s approach feels very much like a ‘bait and switch’. It’s now too late for us to apply for a costs cap, and we’re facing an enormous potential bill if we do not win in Court - seven times higher than Government’s original estimate. This means we’re still more than £200,000 off the sum needed to cover our adverse costs risk in this case. But we aren’t prepared to down tools. Will you help us carry the load?

    Donate
This Government’s approach to public appointments discriminates against those who aren’t born with a silver spoon in their mouths. The principle at stake - that Government must appoint the best candidate, not its best friend - is incredibly important. If we don’t defend this, we don’t see who else can.

The hearing is due to take place in the High Court on 14 and 15 December.

    Thank you for your support.

    Jo Maugham

When the RNLI first started getting bad press over rescuing the asylum seekers I tripled my monthly donation. They aren’t a political organisation, they are volunteers who save human beings from the sea, whatever the circumstances. Those fishermen are just plain wrong, but there is no way any RNLI crew would engage in violence towards them, and despite their actions, they would be risking their own lives to rescue any of them who need help in the future.

Campbell has answered his own question.
It’s not a Labour government, ergo it doesn’t get broadcast at every opportunity and will be swept under the increasingly bumpy carpet, along with all the other wrongdoings of the government.
It’s the country we live in.

Stanley Johnson would have done more this country had he smacked his son's bottom rather than Caroline Nokes' backside. Spaffer might then have have learned not to tell lies.
