Ornstein has also said this: “Although his contract is scheduled to expire next summer, the club have an option to extend it to June 2023, which they will trigger if a transfer does not materialise in the coming weeks — and therefore they are seeking a fee in excess of £15 million." https://www.empireofthekop.com/2022...-ornstein-provides-update-on-liverpool-target/
Unless Cantwell is truly a toxic influence around the club, I'm not sure there's a lot to be gained by us from that kind of arrangement. We're losing the players services and won't have the funds for a replacement (perhaps a small loan fee). Perhaps a damning indication of how far his stock has fallen, unfortunately.
I'd be very surprised if Cantwell would be willing to go to a Championship club, whatever their chance of promotion at this stage.
There'd presumably be a saving on his wages as well as any loan fee. The other consideration is how best to help Cantwell recover his focus and form. A loan might be the best option from that point of view.
I get the feeling he doesn't want to recover his focus and form, Robbie - at least not for us. A loan might be the best option because it gets his negative influence away from the club.
I don't care who we sell but can we buy one of those players that does the thing that puts the ball in the net, and I don't mean Angus
What 'negative influence'? Isn't that just speculation? As I see it, anything that helps Cantwell recover from the bad place he appears to be in at the moment, also helps the club, if not in terms of having him contribute on the pitch, at least in terms of restoring his diminished transfer value.
I'm pretty sure both The Athletic and EDP/Pinkun reported that Cantwell was removed from the first team dressing room at Colney towards the end of Farke's tenure, following a bust up. He wasn't training/interacting with the first team at that time. He was returned to first team duties by Webber as soon as Farke left, and continued there under Smith. Who was right/wrong throughout that process is unknown, but I think it's fair to say that Farke didn't believe Cantwell had done enough to earn a first team recall when he was in charge. His first team performances under Smith, and the story that his CoVid "close contact" over Christmas originated from delivering Christmas presents door-to-door in Dereham, doesn't speak to a player putting 100% effort into his football.
He's a man child perhaps under Sir Alex Ferguson he could be rehabilitated into the starting 11 but on his latest showing, I would class him as not up to the fight . He even did the petulant sulk straight into the dressing room when Smith hooked him . £15m to Newcastle & goodbye would be our best outcome
It's not Cantwell who is in a 'bad place'; it's NCFC. Cantwell is actually in quite a good place at the moment because he is going to get what he has been scheming for since the start of this season - a move to a bigger club. NCFC are the victims in this, not our resident narcissist.
Assuming Mumba to Peterborough means Smith is seeking to make him our RB/LB next season, so wants him to have Champ experience. Id say Aarons has probably been told he can have his move in the summer.
Although he did go straight down the tunnel after coming off, he came back out. He was watching the game from the bench when the match ended and went onto the pitch after the final whistle.
Maybe he needed the toilet, or wanted to vent regarding his own performance out of the view of camera before coming back out to support the team
If I were Webber Id be looking at all the Championship and League 1 teams and scouting the best talent. Players like Ben Brereton at Blackburn and Brennen Johnson at Forest. Yes, they might cost a little extra, but as Iv said before, we should have the money given we will get about £50m for Aarons and Cantwell combined, plus parachute payments. No doubt we will sell others too!
Apparently we are interested in signing Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal. Got to say I’ve not been a fan of what I’ve seen of him so far, looks like he could be capable in the championship but not looked PL quality
Introduced to first team football against us in the cup and scored (twice?). Potentially I believe he could be a very good player but wage demands would likely rule him out.
