It’s not just that though. Newcastle’s valuation of Chris Wood is good. They got him cheap if anything. He is a reliable option, different to anything they have, makes them harder to play against and is a good medium-term option for a club that probably aspires to having megastars in the near future but in the short term needs to survive. Plus, it ****s over Burnley. How much is it worth to take a massive key part out of your cash-strapped rivals in a relegation battle worth millions of pounds?
25 mill for Wood is not cheap! He's 30 years old and has scored 3 goals this season. They've paid at least 10mill over the odds.
Burnley needed him, can’t replace him and Newcastle legitimately do not give a **** about how much he cost. they needed a forward for about the next two years. Plus, he’d do great if they got relegated.
I agree it's a smart signing but they had to meet the release clause as Burnley wouldn't sell to them out of choice.
I just don’t think that they overpaid. People keep saying that nobody will go there because they might go down. Well they’re desperate for a forward too so of course you end up with a Chris Wood. I’d also have assumed a Benteke or something like that. I think the context of the deal more than justifies the cost. Plus, they don’t care.
“Can’t replace him” is an interesting claim here. Why can’t they? There is at least one word missing from that statement surely ?
They’re in massive debt due to a leveraged buyout. I’m sure he wasn’t on massive money and they weren’t planning on replacing him this window. Wood said it was a surprise to everyone. I think it’s very difficult for them.
They spend 25m in the summer and recouped 8m. With no plans initially to balance the books in January . No one expected that bid So the debt didn’t stop them then. Indeed despite this big debt they had more of a net spend than we did Suggests there might be some money there to bring someone in. Whether it is an adequate replacement is the big question
Just hypothetically, let's say it's Newcastle in for Bednarek. They offer £40m. We get the green light for a £20m deal for Broja and a £20m deal for Dean Henderson. All in January. You going for it (considering we have Salisu, Stephens, Lyanco and potentially Simeu in CB)?
It’s that interesting point in the season Nah not for me. Broja is ours til end of season anyway, and our keepers are adequate enough. No point risking it.
Too light at central defence. If Bednarek goes another needs to come in for that position. Simeu is not ready to be that close to the first team Now if it was up to 20m on a CB and 20m on Broja then we might be talking. Goalkeeper was always the plan and budgeted for in the summer
But Newcastle aren’t offering 40m for Bednarek so it is academic They are rumoured to be linked with a Sevilla defender with a 40m asking price and they apparently bid 25m and their second offer was 28m. They didn’t just stick down 40m. And he is in side playing in Europe and challenging for the champions league
Assuming we retain Broja on way or another (loan or perm) do we think we will be looking at another striker in the summer to take Shane Long’s squad space? Might that have been the Delap link? Or might that be an option we are looking at if Broja isn’t here next season ?
Well I know, but then I think they're quite stupid, and he is a PL experienced defender. I don't see it happening in the slightest. Was just having some fun.
I also really don't see us selling a first team player on a long contract midway through the season when we are no longer in a position where we need the money. The only way I can see something like that happening is if the player kicks up a fuss and wants to leave.
They seem to be mix of stupid and sensible which was predictable. Trippier seems sensible. And they don’t want to overpay for the Sevilla defender. But today they were linked with Fellaini. And they are linked with Cantwell which is not where they are weak. But like Wood it is weakening a direct rival if he does go And rumours are that Ramsey is a done deal once he is over covid . Not sure what to make of that one especially if they go anywhere near his Juve wage
Transfermarkt may actually have the valuation right (for a change). Chelsea were - supposedly - looking at Jan a few seasons back. Hmmm, could it please be them now, we could swap Transfermarkt's valuations are usually rather modest, kind of pan-European; they don't seem to factor in the Premier League's market as much as they should. They had Ings valued at £18m, even when he challenged to the last to be league's top scorer. They have Salisu currently at £9m. Once at a big "club" the players valuation then seem to rocket (Hojbjerg £36m).
But Ings probably was only worth 18m really (at the end). Which is why we so gladly took close to 30m Agreed on the big club inflation. Some of the values of the more average big club players are nonsense But if 20m is indeed right for Jan then it explains why we didn’t get the upgrade everyone wanted on him in the summer. We couldn’t
