He threatened to resign when Osborne cut the earnings taper of UC ( as the HoL had knocked back his cut to tax credits ) but didn't go thru with it .

PS the taper has recently been restored to the original .

out of curiousty, how much does raising UC 20 quid a week cost the exchequer (i don't know myself). T&T is still ongoing right now.

I highly respected mate of mine he is definition of working class and is a lefty (raised in millwall, proper chav) and he doesn't like tories.

I haven't really thought of Starmer much but thought he gets a bad rep but my mate says he thinks starmer is charmless and bland and more importantly that labour don't stand for anything and have no policies themselves which was a bit of an eye opener.

I don't know the figure Bobby, but I can see someone has replied since with a figure.

I did see a figure many many months back, but I just don't remember it, other than thinking to myself shhite, that's a lot of dough. I also accept the arguments that Tories have wasted that same amount of dough. However, merely as a policy for any party, do I see it as feasable uplift, no I don't, unless you can take the working element out, by forcing employers to pay decent wages, but even then, some workers would still need to rely on UC (an assumption).

I get very annoyed with Boris when he talks about UC from only a worker perspective, it's clear discrimination on his part, and worse still, he knows what he's doing, it's an old tactic employers use to use to avoid industrial action during company mergers, you uplift a certain segment of your workforce, to force a confidence vote through, oldest trick in the book.

If anyone has been following this convo, this is the part that I said went to the High Court, I've not heard any outcome of this yet, it seems to have dropped right out of the news... https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/lifestyle/money/dwp-legal-case-over-20-25042566

In regards to the bit about Starmer, I prefer to sit on the fence with him for now, rather than giving the odd banter that he's shhite from time to time. I need more time to assess the guy.

    so around 42 billion pounds.

that's a pretty large amount of UC payments, thats like a tenth of the population (inc kids). I'm guessing not everyone would get the 20 quid and is that also because of furlough recently or just that there are that many people underpaid?

i make it just over £6 bn per annum . Everyone would get the £20 . The benefit system has for decades helped people in low wage jobs under variously named schemes e.g Family Income Supplement (FIS) however in the last 20 years the number has ballooned and that is why i have a certain cynicism about claims of high employment as in lots of cases far more is being paid by the state to the wage earner than the state receive back in direct taxation inc NI .

I can see the argument that breaking the law for 10 minutes is perfectly reasonable.

During the lockdown I went to a rave... only for 10 mins.

Then I went to a lock in, at a pub which was supposed to be closed. That was also for 10 mins.

I also attended a mass orgy at a brothel in Withington. But that was only 5 mins... I wasn't going to do it twice <whistle>

    Anyone for cake?

I remember the video of that twat literally cheering and laughing in the House, when the Tory / Lib Dem Govt introduced the raft of benefit cuts that came with their ‘austerity’ measures. He’s a truly rancid bloke, who seems to call literally everything wrong. His consistency is incredible.

to be honest i would sooner rather we up the UC by 20 quid than the tens of billions we fork out on social care for those who own homes/trust funds :p

We could have used that £4.3BN he’s just written off, as he’s too embarrassed to have the true details of the huge criminal frauds that went off with the COVID loans exposed, as they’ll highlight gross incompetence.

But if you or I owe the revenue even just a couple of quid, they’ll chase us to the ends of the earth for it. Go for a **** and miss your UC credit call, here have a sanction and go hungry.

Absolutely this. The one thing i would say is that in terms of covid loans scandal, this will be a one off as i don't foresee another lockdown and money being doled out (i'm sure they will find other ways) which is why i say social care as that will be ongoing money going on forever likewise with UC

I tell you what, we had a decent debate on here this afternoon until you rocked up, the guy, YOU that posted on the forum about the stanley knife slitting wrists, that I took offence too. Ever since then you want to see if you can provoke me, so I'm going to bounce you off, so we don't have to do this anymore.

When I started work many decades ago I was advised by one of my older colleagues that I should marry a rich but ugly girl rather than a pretty but poor one I ignored that, the other advice was never to owe the bank a pound because they would hound you to death, but if you owed the bank a million pounds you would be the bank managers best friend

Both pieces of advise still appear to be sound all these years later

Bobby had worked out from my original £116 mpw that is was £42 bn and i was just giving my calculations and made no comment on whether it can be afforded or not - though if asked i assume no party will go into the next election promising a £20 pw uplift to UC .
