If it were the plan then a replacement would surely have been brought in by now. Or at least rumoured. And the next CB in line from the B team wouldn’t have been sent out on loan
We would need to bring someone else in as we can’t go the rest of the season with 3 CBs And Newcastle are showing how difficult bringing one in can be
Newcastle are finding it difficult to find a first choice CB to lead their defence, in the notoriously difficult January market. I'm not sure that would need apply to us. We're 11 points behind a European place, and 10 points clear of the relegation zone. We can almost certainly afford to wait until the summer to sign a decent replacement. In the meantime, Lyanco could finally be given a decent run to show us what he's about, and we could bring in someone temporary to be our 4th CB for four months.
Yann Valery 'could cover' as 4th choice! I'm not completely being serious about selling a first team CB this late into the window, but if its good money then the board would definitely be tempted.
It's a tricky one. I agree with the premise that we're safe, but the question is whether doing so would have an adverse effect on our player retention and acquisition in the summer. If we tank it a bit down the stretch and finish 15th or something, how does that affect our ability to sign Broja permanently versus the possibility of pushing toward the top half? It might not, I don't know, but as a club that is clearly trying to project that we're not the lower-middle-tier sellers we were, acting like the lower-middle-tier sellers we were by turfing a regular starter with no likelihood of immediately replacing them could have drawbacks.
I approve of this sentiment. Or sell him for £40m with a clause that says he's loaned back to us for the rest of the season...!
Ah I was being facetious. I don’t see it happening, would be an awful move and send the wrong message. It’s all very well saying we could get £40m and reinvest, but who would we get? Without breaking our wage structure? They would need time to bed in. It’s just a bad idea.
His goalscoring has coincided with our upturn with form though... and every team seems to be struggling g for CBs these days. Not for me in January, summer maybe but not now...
I quite like idea of £30m while getting to watch a Sally and The Gorilla duo for the rest of the season.
We have and need 4 senior centre backs, with 3 we are only one serous injury away from being a bit thin in defence.
I am wondering if Newcastle will be able rebuild quite as much as they were hoping in the transfer window. I can see them trying to add a central defender but I cannot see the wholesale reconstruction they will require.I can very much see Newcastle being the bogey team everyone will want to beat. Their surivial will depened on how poor Burnley, Watford and Norwich are and the fact that the first have a load of games in hand, the second a new but proven manaher and the thrird have hit a bit of form is suggestive it will not be easy. I still think the will get relegated and I think Howe will be shown the door if they are not in one of the two topChampionship places at Christmas. It is a disaster waiting to happen and one I think the football world in the widest sense is eagerly awaiting,
I hope every team plays against Newcastle how they played against Man United just after Christmas. They left everything out there. Raised their game to an absolutely shocking degree. It was absolutely no surprise that they cancelled their next two (including against us) after that. My Dad (as a United fan with Saints sympathies) was furious for both reasons
