Just read it mate. Preston is forty minutes from Rochdale where schoolgirls were systematically groomed and abused. What a world this is turning into.
I reckon I have seen it all in my lifetime Smug and I am pretty much hardened to life. I worked with serious offenders for 32 years and can recognise the warning flags but I still can't get my head around how anyone can hold another human with so much disdain that they would write something like that.
The Financial Times has published a lovely interview with Peter Hennessy, the crossbench peer and historian who is credited with (among many other things) coining the “good chap” theory of government - the notion that the constitution depends on the assumption that leaders will behave decently. Henry Mance, who interviewed Hennessy, writes: But Boris Johnson doesn’t accept the limits. He has overridden the advice of his ethics adviser and the House of Lords appointments commission; he has refused to resign despite allegations of misleading parliament. “If the prime minister is the number one wrong ’un, you’re in deep, deep trouble. It’s shown us the fragility of our constitution,” says Hennessy, whose former students include Simon Case, now head of the civil service. Johnson seems to be the only subject that makes Hennessy visibly angry. “He is the greatest trouble to the good chap system of any prime minister that I’ve observed,” he says. “Anthony Eden lied to parliament about the collusion with Israel [in the 1956 Suez crisis], but in his defence he felt he had to do that because it was overwhelmingly important for the state. But Boris does it, you get the impression in the bad weeks, almost daily.” It has led to “a bonfire of the decencies”.
A world where the rich and powerful see the poor and defenceless as "easy meat". Thatcher said there is no such thing as society. It is survival of the fittest ( bank account) this has progressed to a bunch of entitled elitists who believe that others not born into wealth are there for the picking. You get the government you deserve and the poor voted them in unfortunately.
Think the liar says something factorial wrong several times, he believes the majority of the public will believe him. Therefore this smells like teen spirit comment will be repeated over time and the public will come to accept this is how people behave... Starmer needs to grab the moral high ground as quickly as possible or our society is ruined
What is also interesting is that the man making the comments, is effectively, The Establishment, and they do not like the stink! Bonko is letting the side down, its just not cricket etc
A couple of by-elections coming up so we will see how the land lies then. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/imran-ahmad-khan-jail-tory-b2085208.html https://www.theguardian.com/politic...-parish-broke-law-by-watching-porn-in-commons
Leaders and governments come and go but generally leave things in a reasonable state, some actually improve things. They call it their legacy and like to believe it reflects well on them. The current PM is the Harry Redknapp of politics. It all seemed liked great fun, to his supporters, and lasting success seemed easy and guaranteed. But the fun only masked the harm that was being done and the money that was being wasted. It now seems Johnson wasn't laughing with us, he was laughing at us.
Well said marra, he's surrounded himself with sycophants and dimwits hoping the party believe he's the only option for success in the next election. Any who show any potential, Sunak and Truss, are gradually chipped away at with leaked stories of poor performance. Starmer and Labour need to up their game before the liar drags our society down.
They're talking about rail strikes now, food shortages and no way to stop illegal immigrants. I'm heading towards the end of my life so don't worry too much. It's my little grandbairns I'm concerned about. I had an hour between trains at Wigan Station yesterday so went for 'lunch'. Oh my Lord, it's desolate and the people have all but given up. It's absolutely filthy, people wasted on the street at 1pm and the landlady posting up the weekend's banned list on 'Pub Watch'. Every other shop is boarded up and the ones that are open just sell shyte. I'm glad I'm back in my bubble and I ain't coming out for a while.
The Road to Wigan Pier is a book by the English writer George Orwell, first published in 1937. The first half of this work documents his sociological investigations of the bleak living conditions among the working class in Lancashire and Yorkshire in the industrial north of England before World War II.
I was in Wigan myself yesterday working. Standish. Tragic family beaten by life and the kid hugely vulnerable to exploitation as a result of having ill parents and no money.
This is just the start. Give the Tories another 50 years and we will be back to workhouses. Scrooge, Bob Cratchett and Tiny Tim's will be a reality make no mistake.
