Focussing too much on race risks causing greater segregation and stigmatisation, the equalities minister has warned, as she said she did not want to be viewed as a black role model.

“One of those barriers to equal opportunity will be prejudice and discrimination. But there are many, many others. There are cultural barriers, geographic issues: you live in a town where all the schools are terrible and there is no work.

“One of the problems is everybody's looking at that first pillar. It's all about prejudice and discrimination and not about all the other things that you need to remove in order to get equality of opportunity.

“The more we talk about race and prejudice and discrimination in that particular way, the more we keep segregating people into groups and creating stigmatisation.”
