The vaccines thing is a red herring... FactCheck: Brexit did not speed up UK vaccine authorisation – Channel 4 News As for Ukraine, they're desperate to join the EU aren't they? It's almost as if they don't want 'freedom'. How about labour shortages and higher inflation rates than other major economies?
This is the argument by Remainers - the EU is wonderful, but if we had stayed in, we wouldn't have participated in the EU vaccine scheme because it is crap. The fact is, had we stayed in the EU there'd have been huge pressure by Corbyn's Labour, the Lib Dems, Channel 4 etc to stay in the EU scheme. Ukraine wants to join the EU because it's a further split from Russia, it will get huge grants (if members can agree on them,) and because it's landmass is so huge, it has no issue with unlimited immigration from EU states, indeed it may welcome it.
Perhaps that's what Boris is doing in Rwanda. Telling them he didn't realise they'd take him seriously on any agreement he signed so seeking to renege on the agreement with Rwanda because it would now be cheaper to send all our illegals to Ukraine instead.
Comment please on my controversial view. Several dozen letters ( the Times this morning) have been submitted to the 1922 committee asking for changes in the rules about votes of no confidence in the leader/ PM. Now I actually think this is wrong. Is this the same party who was saying to Remoaners " just get over the Brexit vote". I am conflicted... Boris is by far the worst PM we have ever had ( well in my lifetime and my admittedly limited historical knowledge). Rules is rules and you cannot change them . You had your chance P.s. I am sure Boris' Sociopathic traits have now developed into full blooded mania. I suspect he is certifiably ill
I agree with you. I wouldn’t be surprised if Johnson’s own supporters triggered the vote early knowing he’d have more chance winning it before the two by-elections.
Now there's a thought Ubes and one that could well ring true. I agree with Beth, Johnson is the worst PM in my lifetime by a country mile. He's not budging because whilst he's PM and raping the country, he's making his donors richer and richer. He's not ill, he's just morally corrupt. He really doesn't care about the damage to the UK and its inhabitants as long as he and his chums are making money. We the electorate put him in charge, even knowing his dodgy, untrustworthy past. Sometimes you reap what you sow.
0 I also said that at the time too...uber. If they had waited...he would have fallen. I expect a couple/ more than a couple of the letter writers voted for Boris in the confidence vote. Makes me hate then even more. He is a sociopath Bob.. No doubt about it
Of course you can change rules. Why not? You just need a process to do it, preferably a transparent one. Otherwise we’d still be giving a tenth of our income to the church. But these people don’t even require that, they are brought up to believe they know best and are allowed to change things to suit themselves at will.
I'm delighted. The longer he clings to power the greater the chance of the Tories being destroyed at the next election.
I’d never underestimate their ability to portray themselves as the opposition needed to fix the mess nor the electorate’s willingness to buy into it again because Starmer once drove at 32 in a 30.
I don't have strong feelings either way but err on the 1922 being allowed to change their own rules, as long as they do it according to the rules they've set out for changing the rules. If in the 1922 elections the Tory backbenchers end up voting a 1922 committee that wants to reform the rules on leadership contests, that's essentially a proxy no confidence vote in Johnson anyway. Any other PM at that point would admit the game is up. In many respects it's a moot point. The real issue is that none of the big beasts in Cabinet had any gumption and weren't willing to tell Johnson his time is up. He needed some of his senior ministers to tell him his time is up but for various reasons none of them were willing to do that. Until the likes of Truss are willing to come out against him, he'll trudge on.
Theres a decent argument either way, if a rule is no longer fit for purpose of course it requires changing… however when it’s down to those in power and it just doesn’t fit their current agenda, they strip back rights or the change makes those changing less accountable.. yeah then we have a problem. Most of the rule/law changes were set out in the Tory manifesto so most should come of no surprise.
