Good Morning. It's Monday 4th July, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Cashing in was the right thing to do

Former Striker Brian Deane believes that £42m is a fair price for Kalvin Phillips, and Leeds should be able to put the money to good use. Deane, famed for scoring the very first Premier League goal, back in 1992 (5 mins against Manchester Utd) enjoyed a playing career spanning over twenty years, including two spells at Elland Road. His no nonsense approach and physical attributes on the field made him a fan favourite on the terraces.

After twelve years of loyal service, the Yorkshire Pirlo will pen a four-year deal at the Etihad, worth an estimated £85,000 - £125,000 (depending on which sources you believe). Whilst Phillips will be sorely missed, Deane believes that it's a good deal for a holding midfielder and uses Yves Bissouma (£35m to Spurs) and Idrissa Gueye (available for a nominal fee from PSG) as other examples.

Even when fit, Phillips struggled last season to hit the kind of form we have been used to, both for Leeds and England; and the former marksman has expressed his concern that he won't find life easy at the Etihad! Speaking exclusively to the Breakfast Debate, Deane said:-

"The sale of Kalvin Phillips makes sense. If you can get good money for a holding midfielder, you’d take it! I don’t think it’s the kind of position that you build your team around. There are some very good technical players out there that are a lot cheaper, that you can develop! Cashing in was the right thing to do!"

"I think £42m was a fair price. If you look at Yves Bissouma, or Idrissa Gueye, there are other options out there. It will be interesting to see how he settles in at Manchester City because one of the things that I noticed at the last England game, was there were times as a midfield player, that he should perhaps have dropped and make better angles and try to draw the opposition out of position."

"I think Kalvin was having a hard time, and as a result, there were less options for our two centre halves. If you do that at Manchester City, it will cause a blockage. He will have to learn their system; it’s never easy to a club where everyone is a superstar; it doesn’t matter who you are, you still have to go and prove yourself. It was the same for me when I went to Leeds. I tried to fit in, instead of being myself, and it was only when realised I had to play my game, that I threw those shackles off."

Leeds ready to activate Camera's release clause

Austrian news outlet, the 'Salzburger Nachrichen' have stated that Leeds are ready to activate the £25.9m (€30m) release clause of Mohamed Camera. The Malian international, tipped as the ‘new Kante’ has made a huge impact at Red Bull Salzburg since signing from Swiss outfit FC Liefering in the summer of 2019.

The story holds credence. The Salzburger Nachrichen broke the story about Brenden Aaronson signing for Leeds back in January. Should Leeds be successful, it will be the third Salzburg player moving to West Yorkshire this Summer.

Leeds Prepping €15m offer for Adams

Leeds Utd pursuit of Mohamed Camera may have been thrown into doubt after it was revealed that Tyler Adams could be available for loan! The 23yo USA International Midfielder has fallen out of favour with new Leipzig Coach Domenico Tedesco who replaced Jesse Marsch last December.

It is believed that the hierarchy at the Bundesliga outfit are reluctant to deal with Leeds until the Jean-Kevin Augustin fiasco has been sorted out, even though Adams himself has expressed his desire to link with his former boss! If Leipzig refuse to sanction Adams sale to Elland Road, why would they allow a loan deal?

Nevertheless, Sky Deutchsland last night reported that Victor Orta was 'prepping an opening £12.9m (€15m) offer' to make the move permanent. It was revealed last week by Phil Hay, that even though the JKA dispute remains unsolved, Orta has a very good relationship with the Leipzig hierarchy.

Orta gets his man after 18 month pursuit

Darko Gyabi will become Leeds fourth signing of the season later today, penning a long term contract at Elland Road in the process. Many expected the announcement to take place shortly after passing his medical on Friday, but as Kalvin Phillips (going the other way) had only returned from holiday that previous afternoon, the paperwork was held up.

It has been revealed that Leeds also had their eye on Romeo Lavia (now headed for Southampton) and James McAtee, but after City made a beeline for Kalvin Phillips, Orta jumped at the chance to bring Gyabi into the equation. He had been tracking the former Bermondsey lad for 18 months. Even back then, he was taken with his strong physique, his technique with both feet and versatility in midfield. Now, at 18 and 6ft 2', Gyabi is physically ready for the next chapter in his fledgling career.

Is it just me or is the whole transfer stuff more depressing by the week. Not helped by the fact that seemingly Im the only Leeds fan alive who knows nothing about Camara or Adams. At least if you believe social media, every fan there is an expert on these lads and have been studying them for years. Eire must be a bad fan

    Morning all :emoticon-0148-yes:
Be very interesting to see which DM we buy or even if we are going after them both. There are usually reliable sources saying we are signing Camera and the same about Adams, are they both correct and if so bloody well done as both can play in various positions?

Plastic <laugh> no mate just think some fans hear a name and do some google work. Myself I look at the odd video (misleading) and read reports from pundits from whichever country but only if its a credible player. For example looked at CDK and Gopka video but not gone any further as right now not credible. On the other hand I did some digging on Adams injury problem, or perceived injury problem

    Good morning,

I'd have been relatively happy with Camara and Roca, but around 60 mil for them plus Adams worries me about how much we'll have remaining to spend elsewhere.

If we can still get a quality forward and a quality replacement for Raphinha, assuming he goes, then fair enough. But if it means we miss out on our first choice forward then i'd rather we just signed our two favourite of the three.

Call yourself a Leeds fan Eire. How can you never have heard of Mickey Adams or Chris Camara (yes I know its spelt with a K, but comedic effect allows the misspelling :) ).

However I will agree I have no idea why social media is going mad over two players that played for us in the late 80's early 90's ;)

just you bud... probably the extended hangover from the baby shower doesn't help:emoticon-0105-wink:

Seriously, i think it's the most interesting transfer window i can remember as a leeds fan. Obviously after promotion year there was a 'who will we sign to strengthen the team' interest. But this summer, with our squad looking jiggered last year... our two star players were destined to leave, a number of stalwarts with long-term injuries and a number of others now the wrong side of 30... so a major rebuild was on the cards. Yes there's a 'will it work/won't it work' element to this, but that was always going to be the case. I'm looking forward to the new season with a sense of anticipation, i like seeing young players coming in.

I understand people want to see proven british players coming in, and i get it, but reality is if we signed a bunch of premiership proven players, they'd likely be proven to be average at best and I'd be pretty 'meh' about the likes of che adams.

Suppose the point is, you could google League of Ireland football and find great looking footballers but irrelevant as at a vastly different standard. I know nothing about the league Salzburg are in, how does it relate standard wise to the English game. Are we talking Championship, League 1. Its why Im reluctant to get over excited or despondent about incomings especially as they are originating outside of the English game. Sooner season kicks off and we can get some idea of our direction, the better

It's a tricky one I agree, Haarland was at RB Salzurg in 19-20 season and seems to have turned out OK but, as you say, let the season begin and then we will all be able to see.

Not being an avid watcher of the Austrian league I guess it's difficult to assess, however they got through the group stage of the Champions League last season. The teams in their group (they finished 2nd) were Sevilla, Wolfsburg and Lille, and they lost in the last 16 to Bayern Munich. They won all three of their home group games, and got an away draw with Sevilla, losing 1-0 away to Lille and 2-1 away to Wolfsburg.

Season before they finished 3rd in their Champions League group, which included Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Lokomotiv Moscow and season before that they finished 3rd in their group which included Liverpool, Napoli and Genk.

In 2018/19 season they lost in the Champions League qualifying playoffs and thus played in the Europa League. They won their group, which included Celtic, Rosenberg and RB Leipzig, beat Club Brugge in the last 32, and lost 4-3 on aggregate to Napoli in the last 16.

Going back one season further to 2017/18 they got to the semi finals of the Europa League, losing 3-2 to Marseille after extra time, having beaten Lazio, Borussia Dortmund and Real Sociedad in the previous knock out rounds.

So whilst we may have doubts about the quality of the Austrian League overall, they manage to hold their own when it comes to European competition, other than when playing one of the big teams.

You're not on your own Eireleeds. We're all scrambling around youtube and Wikipedia trying to find out who these new lads are.

Not heard of Camara or Kristensen before we were interested. Only heard of Aaronson because we were in for him in January. Roca came from nowhere. Now, I do have some inside information on Tyler Adams which I have been keeping secret from the forum. I bought him for Leeds on FIFA 20 as a youngster and he turned in to some player. Solid.

Now, I've seen two videos on Camara which show the same highlights. I'm all in on him. He's the next Makelele and a better version of Kante. Get him at any price.

As for Salzburg, they reached the last 16 of the CL where they lost 8-1 on aggregate to Bayern Munich.

these are all fair points Eire... Salzburg dominate a weak league in Austria. They have however done well in Europe and have a reputation for picking young players from other leagues.. and then selling them on where they prove successful at other clubs - Haaland and Mane the two biggest name examples but a fair few others have gone on to big name clubs eg naby keita, frequently to sister club leipzig. Some, not all obviously, have been a success. A few forwards have been mixed in the PL - daka, chan, minamino.

Eire players leaving Salzburg to come to Leeds are actually taking a backward step as the teams they play in the CL and beat would beat us. Can you imagine the teams they played last season in the CL playing us last season it would have been a bloodbath. We just need to go with it and keep our fingers crossed

Yep. I reckon hire the best guys from brentford and salzburg and we'd do alright!

I think The red bull network works well for them... an MLS club to help get the best talent from the US/central america... then Salzburg acts as a feeder club/testing ground in Europe for leipzig. Think Salzburg also have some links to Mali, which seems to pull a lot of african talent... including camara.

As Fabrizio Romano says Gyabi is part of the deal which means equivalent of £47m for Phillips plus £3m add ons to make £50m

after the numerous debates on this last week, it's interesting that romano says gyabi is part of the deal... maybe we're not paying 'extra' and there was a paper value put on him to lower the price of phillips. Guess we'll discover soon enough.
