Always find this part of the season (between Goodwood and York really boring) and it's made worse this year by the prevailing firm ground which horses can't seem to run on anymore. At least today there is one outstanding race and that's the 4.15 at the Curragh. You can't discount one of the runners as likely winners (well maybe Apache Law).

A shame Blackbeard has been scratched but still an intriguing contest and I will be rooting for Bradsell.

I was looking at the races at Pune on SportingLife.com just out of curiosity. I visited that Indian city a couple of years back on a business trip but was unaware that it had a racecourse. It was quite amusing when I clicked on one of the horse’s names to see the form and found that the list of owners’ names ran to about ten people and the horse had mostly been running at Mumbai, a hundred miles away, and Chennai, seven hundred miles away.

Some disappointing fields at HQ but the feature Sweet Solera has attracted nine. I was quickly put off it when I saw that tail flashing Lakota Sioux (the form pick on her Chesham third for the Johnstons) was taking on Novakai (gave trouble at the stalls but won her only start easily beating an odds on Johnston filly).

Amazing how it can still manage to rain in the Manchester area when the soft Southerners are having hosepipe bans. The going at Haydock reported as good to soft.

In the Dick Hern (3:35) there looks to be a money printing opportunity in the form of George Boughey’s Oscula, who won a decent race over a furlong shorter at Goodwood and appears to have a bundle in hand of her main market rival Crenelle (third in the Sandringham) – 10lb on the ratings and she beat the Sandringham winner Heredia at Goodwood. The favourite’s third in the 2021 Prix Marcel Boussac is far and away the best form on offer, so why am I avoiding this gift horse? Somebody will be along to tell me that if the race was run 1000 times it would win more than 400 so it is value. <laugh>

Before that the Rose Of Lancaster (3:00) contains several interesting form lines. Last year’s winner Foxes Tales has not been in the same form this term and I have burned my fingers on him already so it is hard to fancy a repeat. He was well beaten last time by Passion And Glory and that one may be the fly in the ointment for favourite Grocer Jack. The Haggas runner pipped Cadillac at Sandown last time in a five runner race where the front two left the other three in a different parish; however, both he and the bin Suroor runner like to be up front. Could they do each other in? The lightly raced Royal Champion steps up from a handicap and could be better than has been seen to date but has obviously had his problems. Another that has few miles on the clock is last year’s Cambridgeshire runner up ANMAAT, who won the John Smith’s Cup first time up and should still be able to account for Intellogent given that one was race fit when finishing third. From my point of view the main downside of betting on him finding the improvement to step up from handicaps is that my jinx jockey is on board.

I will give Ascot a miss. There is one running that is on my watch list and there looks to be a Haggas’ favourites hat-trick on the card.

    16:40 Haydock - Thunder Legend
Excellent chance in this Class-3 Handicap over 7f. Tongue-strap being applied for first time which will probaby help. Distance and going should be ideal. Tom Marquand on board for the William Haggas yard. 9/4 best price at time of writing.
17:15 Haydock - Above It All
Class-5 Handicap over 7f.. Hopefully selection will complete a last and penultimate race double for Tom Marquand, who will be riding this time for the Ed. Walker yard. Selection has no easy task but should run well. 7/2 best price at time of writing.

(Win on each and e/w double)

Have a successful day folks. I too am not wild about this Shergar Cup, never have been, but I guess I'll be watching ITV as usual on a Saturday. :emoticon-0167-beer:

Well, Quarter MoonII, luckily this 'soft southerner' (bloody cheek <laugh>) lives down in Bavaria, in Munich, for many years actually. It really is amazing what a 'banana belt' location Munich is in. While the rest of Europe sweated, we had fairly tolerable maximum temperatures, but loads of thunderstorms with plenty of rain. Last night it rained like hell (don't have to clean the outside windows!) so it's nice and cool today. I have been fortunate to live down here. Same goes for the Winter months, we rarely get the freezing temperatures other parts of Germany get, especially up north. Hence the 'banana belt' description I like to give.
More seriously, I have always been a bit disappointed that I have not spent more time in the north of the UK, although I did work and live in Aberdeen for a couple of years, and Hartlepool for 6-months before moving down to Gt. Yarmouth.

Brave performance from Lakotah Sioux - no reservations about her despite the swishing tail.

Swanny, you knew what I meant by soft Southerner – just because you are further South and in a different country further East.

Anyway, my one bet won and I was right to not look too closely into the mouth of the gift horse as it was beaten just over a length fourth in a blanket finish and the bookies could not give it away – clearly the winner was fancied. My watchlist horse won easily at Ascot so I missed one there and it ended up 3/1.

It was impressive Oddy but, if times are anything to go by, the placed horses would have been unplaced in the earlier G3; I think it's safe to say we can ignore the run by Bradsell; slowly away and stumbled twice (at start and after 1f); Even so, as a result, the form with Persian Force was turned round by 3l so difficult to see how he would have beaten Little Big Bear today. He's now 5/1 fav for the 2000Gns. Will he stay 8f, being sired by Nay Nay Never. You would think so, the way he finished today, and the dam is by French Derby winner and Arc 2nd Bering (beaten by Dancing Brave). Personally, wouldn'( back him at those odds but wouldn't be in a hurry to bet against him either

Aberdeen, Hartlepool, and Gt. Yarmouth ? Mmmmm....Strange choice of coastal resorts. No wonder you feel you should have spent more time in the north- the real north, that is! Even Napoleon wouldn't have been exiled on those beaches.<laugh>

<laugh> Well, Tamerlo, I wasn't exactly on vacation in any of those places. I do remember that in Gt. Yarmouth holiday-makers were quite often a bloody nuisance for those of us working there. (Early days of North Sea drilling operations, gas fields being the target. Crude Oil came later, in the early part, off Aberdeen)

Whilst Little Big Bear created a good impression visually, sauntering away with the Phoenix Stakes, I would not be in any hurry to back him for the 2000 Guineas at the chronically poor odds of 5/1. You are right that from a form perspective Bradsell’s effort gets a line through it.

O’Brien has farmed the race this century, although he had not won any of the last four renewals. Look at some of the previous winners that have come from Ballydoyle and their records at Newmarket or The Curragh:

2001 Johannesburg – unbeaten two year old, targeted at the Kentucky Derby (unplaced).
2005 George Washington – won Phoenix Stakes by eight lengths, won 2000 Guineas, second Irish 2000 Guineas.
2006 Holy Roman Emperor – retired to stud after two year old career.
2008 Mastercraftsman – won Phoenix Stakes by four and a half lengths, unplaced 2000 Guineas, won Irish 2000 Guineas.
2010 Zoffany – failed to win as a three year old, never ran in Guineas but close second to Frankel at Royal Ascot.
2015 Air Force Blue – champion two year old of 2015, unplaced odds on favourite 2000 Guineas, unplaced Irish 2000 Guineas.
2016 Caravaggio – won Phoenix Stakes by four lengths at 1/8, stuck to sprinting as a three year old.

Whilst his pedigree gives every indication that Little Big Bear will stay a mile, could they decide that he has more in the way of speed and stick to sprinting?

Of non Ballydoyle winners, Siskin (2020) won the Irish 2000 Guineas, so George Washington was the last horse to do the Phoenix-2000 Guineas double (the only one in the last 40 years).
