Good Morning. It's Monday 8th August, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Perfect start to campaign after early setback

Leeds started their 22/23 campaign in style, coming back from a goal down to beat Wolves in front of a packed out Elland Road crowd. This was the third time in as many games that Leeds had trailed their West Midland adversaries, only to deliver a sucker punch when they least expected it.

Last October, Rodrigo's 94th minutes penalty cancelled out Hwang Hee-chan's 10th minute strike to share the spoils. However, the pièce de résistance of comebacks took place in March, shortly after Jesse Marsch had taken over. Leeds found themselves 2-0 down, with only thirty left on the clock. Goals from Harrison, Rodrigo and an injury time winner from Ayling, completed Wolves misery on that day.

Leeds got off to the worst possible start after just five minutes. Pedro Neto outmuscled Kristensen deep on the left wing. His cross field long ball was headed down by Gibbs White into the pathway of Daniel Podence. His mishit volley smashed into the ground before bouncing up and over Meslier with the assistance of the underside of the crossbar.

Gradually, after a poor start, Leeds began to settle, and create chances of their own. Halfway through the first half, they got their reward. Arronson robbed Gibbs White of possession in his own penalty area, after the visitors failed to clear their lines. The ball fell kindly to Rodrigo, who fired a diagonal shot, hard and low past Sa at his near post. It was his fourth goal in two games, and third strike in as many matches against Bruno Lage's team.

Wolves looked the more dangerous side going into the break; only acrobatic saves from Meslier, kept the scores level at half-time. Leeds were the more dominant side in the second half, and deservedly got their winner fifteen minutes from time. Second half substitute Klich carved open the Wolves defence, releasing Bamford deep on the nearside penalty area. His low cross into the penalty area caused Rayan Ait-Nouri to turn the ball past his own keeper after pressure from Aaronson.

There are some things that you cannot say

Jesse Marsch and Bruno Lage exchanged angry words following the final whistle as tempers threatened to boil over. Lage was clearly unhappy about something Marsch had said during the first half and launched a verbal assault on the American. Marsch retaliated, and it seemed the incident may have escalated, but Lage retreated. During his post match presser, the Portuguese coach revealed:-

“Nothing against the manager, they won and it was absolutely great,” “But there was a point in the first half when I heard something I didn’t like and I said that to him. “When you come in the end and say, ‘Apologise’…
“There are some things, in my opinion, that you cannot say and I just said that and after that I didn’t listen.

“But the most important thing is that Leeds won so congratulations to the team, the players and the manager because we lived today an amazing moment with a great atmosphere and I’m here to play the game the way we want to play.”

Marsch too, played down the incident, adding:- “It’s normal,” “I respect him (Lage) a lot and he does a good job with his team. So no problem.” “You could go back to Wolves away last year,” “It was emotion. I wanted to be respectful afterwards. But it didn’t quite go that way. But I’m OK and I think he’s OK.”

Shipping container of Leeds shirts plunge into sea

The Daily Mail has reported that a shipping container of Leeds shirts has plunged into the sea. The cargo was headed for South East Asia where support for West Yorkshire's finest is growing fast. A severe outbreak of Covid in Singapore, (where the Leeds shirts are manufactured) has already slowed down production, and it is now feared that the latest hold up could have a detrimental effect on shirt sales, which are normally around 300,000.

A very good morning to you all
Only saw the highlights but wow what a performance, exceeded even my own hopes and expectations particularly in the first half, the new players gelled in realy well & looked most comfortable with their teammates. How nice it was to see the hole team singing from the same hymn sheet.
Also just as important to see, was how the team can now mix it up when needed, a great display of free flowing attacking football first half, then when needed dig in and grind out a winner in the second half. For me I couldn’t of asked for more, oh and by the way was most impressed with jesse, thought he looked a bit soft maybe, but gone right up in my estimation, the passion he showed for us was great, thought for a moment he was gonna deck Lage <laugh>.
Only one game I know, but this season we will not be the whipping boys or a pushover for any side.
So all in all the best start I could have hoped for.

Harland does what it says on the tin scores goals and will score many more this seasonI see KP spent a whole minute on the pitch not time to count his money
Antonson played well indeed all the new signings did their part now lrts get a LB and striker sorted and not mess aboutI do not want Adams from Saintsnot prolific enough for me like the look of The PSG striker

    Morning all :emoticon-0148-yes:
    Better start than last season
Team looks more solid and more of a team
Didnt really miss the injured and suspended
Rodrigo 4 goals in 2 games
Ahead of some of the so called relegation teams already by 3 points
Ahead of Man Utd by 3 and Liverpool by 2

Whats not to like and yes there will be Monday morning blues to come but not today

Good weekend all round to be fair. I'll be interested to see how they look against a better team though playing the new lasso way. Hoping they will be good as well, but they do look exposed defensively to counter attacks, but time will tell.

All round good performance, Arronson looks lively, endless energy which is great to see. Also seeing Rodrigo actually playing better than usual is also a plus. Really hoping he turns into the player we bought him for. Fingers crossed.

Roll on to next Saturday against Southampton.

    Morning,

I don't agree with the report that we were the more dominant side in the 2nd half. Did we even touch the ball in the first 25 mins of the 2nd half? We did go onto improve though and overall i'd say we just about edged the game, especially since we had a stone wall penalty turned down. Wolves aren't a great side but I also don't think they'll be relegated so I reckon that performance puts us on track for lower mid table with a few players still to come in.

I was impressed with Aaronson and Roca.

Kristensen had moments that showed he's an exciting prospect but also a couple of nervy moments. I didn't notice Adams so much.

We're going to get undone down the wings this season. We play narrow and Kristensen is often caught up the other end. Struijk did just about okay at LB but it's clear isn't the long term solution.

I also think a special mention needs to be given to Meslier for a couple of great saves and Klich who turned the game around at a time when we were getting dominated. Without those two it would've been a draw a best, or more likely, a loss.

    Morning all.

When Jesse first came in I'd never seen a team plays so narrow and it just looked weird with all our attacking players within 25 yards of each other. It would seem those tactics have now been tweaked and adapted as we now look pretty normal shape wise although obviously still different to the previous manager/coach who placed great emphasis on occupying the wide areas.

The advantages to keeping a better shape were clear to see as it allowed forward passes into Rodrigo (and Klich when he came on). The pass from Tyler Adams to Klich for the winning goal being a great example of simple football done well when our shape is spot on.

Mentioned on the 'ins and outs' thread that we won't particulary miss Phillips as Roca and Adams are both good passers of the ball as well as being tenacious and looking to get a foot in. They're both progressive and forward thinking with their passing in a way that Forshaw isn't so hopefully they both stay fit.

Where we could have been significantly stonger is if we'd managed to keep Raphinha for one more season as having Aaronson, Adams, Roca & Kristensen in the team would have massively helped Raph be the flair player that he is....unfortunately not meant to be so we move on and hope that Sinisterra or Dan James can do similar damage to the opposition <ok>

I watched the game live and have a few comments. I was livid with Kristensen after the Wolves goal, what on earth have we bought here! After that he was excellent, I totally forgave him. How he didn't get a penalty is a mystery, Sa absolutely polaxed him. If he had been through on goal he'd have been given a penalty so it defies logic that it wasn't a pen and the ref wasn't even advised to go and have a second look? Just as well we won the game!

I notice that Meslier is kicking the ball without taking a touch. I feel much better watching it, let Wolves have it back in their half. Why take the extra touch, it's not needed and just gives the opponents a chance if there's a mistake made (Nketiah last season).

Bamford makes such a difference to the team, if he stays fit then we'll be fine. Overall a far brighter start to the season (including pre season) than last year. Thank god.

spot on this and hopefully no more tippy tappy at the back which only shows our players not being good enough. Watched Man City yesterday and impossible to get the ball off them

What is it with this new ticketing system ? Queued for 45 minutes, then selected two seats only to be told that "the allocation of tickets for this period of sale has now been reached" and won't let me buy them. But there's plenty available, WTF ?
