I still think he'll sign and if he doesn't then we sell and move on. If he thinks moving to someone like Middlesbrough is a step up in his career then good luck to him.
Do you have an ear to the ground on the current situation, Howden? I’m not privy to how these things work tbh but it seems to be dragging on a lot. We’ve all heard that Greaves wants to stay and his dad presumably is advising him to stay, but he’s rejected several offers now, hasn’t he? It seems a repeat of the Honeyman situation where he rejected several offers and we eventually sold him.
That’s fine and you’ve mentioned that’s common practice for negotiations but that was presumably the same with Honeyman and that ended up with him going. Thing is, the players who have signed extensions like Ingram and Fleming weren’t reported as rejecting offers before accepting a later one. They may have done so, but the first we heard of Ingram and Fleming’s contract negotiations were them signing.
I think this is all completely fairly put, but it's not worth getting into back and forths until we know one way or the other. Some seem determined to think he'll stay and there's nothing to worry about, others think rejecting multiple offers is an indication he might leave. Everyone has an opinion and it doesn't seem like it'll change.
I will never go Into individual financial info as 1 I don't think it's fair on individuals to have their personal stuff discussed in public and 2 I can never be 100% sure it's correct..... But from what I've been told, we have made him a very good offer ( imo ) for a player of his age and stage in his career which wouldn't put him level with players like seri for example but certainly inline with with the core of the squad. His side wants more ££ and a shorter deal. How true all that is I can't say as it's only what I have been told by an agent I know. ( He's not involved in the deal btw ) Personally I hope he stays, I think he will stay. But I also think he/his party need to be sensible and understand his stage of career and development and not look at players like tufan/seri and automatically think they should be level with them in terms of wage / bonus etc
True, I just can’t help but worry. If you can’t get a hometown lad who has said he wants to stay and has been made vice-captain to sign a contract extension amid rumours of him going to a fellow Championship club, something’s wrong imo.
All depends on why the deal can't be signed / agreed. If it was under the Allan's still we know for sure it was because of a **** offer. But this time I don't think it is that. Hopefully for all parties, we get him signed up as he's great to have in the team. But if he won't them I'd say we'd be daft not to move him on for a decent fee as opposed to losing him on a free / minimal compensation
The management team have chosen to totally change the squad in one transfer window. I’d have preferred them to do so more gradually, particularly as the management have little experience of the championship. Their recruitment policy is to bring in players from overseas, who again have little experience of the championship and are having to settle in a new country. However, it’s their choice to build this way and hopefully in the long run, may lead to more exciting football. It was always going to be to a rocky start. Add the way the fixtures have panned out and then the chronic injury list, it was a perfect storm. So four points against two teams likely to end up in the top half is absolutely fine to me for a team in such transformation. Additionally, all good teams are built from the back and we seem to have that sorted. Some performances have confirmed that it is going to take time to get going properly. I suspect it’ll be after the World Cup break that we start to see the team taking shape and that we can properly judge Shota. Until then, I’d be more than happy we are able to pick up sufficient points to stay clear of relegation zone so the ‘new team’ can play without having the crowd on their backs.
Cheers, Howden. I wasn’t expecting you to go into the details of the offer numbers-wise; I was just wondering if you knew what the situation was in terms of negotiations and whether the club and Jacob have hit a dead end.
I know, just wanted to make it clear for others. I don't think it's a dead end. I just think some expectations needs to change on both sides and everyone to be sensible
That’s fair. My other concern is if he does go, where can we find a left-footed centre-half who is just as good if not better for a reasonable fee who will adjust quickly to the demands of the Championship? Unlike KLP, it would be far riskier to try and replace Greaves with a unknown talent from abroad imo. Tricky wingers are a dime a dozen but a left-footed centre-half who is composed and comfortable at this level is far more rare and more difficult to sign.
Why don’t you think it is that It’s the same reason honeyman left new players coming in on 20 grand a week You’re best players would want parity They don’t they’ll be off I’d do the same and he'd be moving to an excellent tho bit of a **** of a manager at boro who really knows what system he likes to play and utilises his centre backs well in that system It’s a very good move for greavesy
Numbers-wise, KLP would always cost more than Greaves as English attacking talent is inflated in this market. However, I would argue Greaves is more valuable to us as a club than KLP ever was.
Agreed. He knows we have the money but aren't offering it, he knows his place in the team (he's vice captain after all), and if we aren't offering it to him then he'll be off and Boro would be paying him a lot more.
Wilder takes his game to another level. After watching how Basham excelled for them in the overlapping centre half role Greavesy is a dream for Wilder
Agree that other clubs may not pay what we got for KLP, but then that's fine and we should hold onto him. However my point is about us needing to value him that highly, and therefore compensate him in line with that.
