I'd rather you didn't. The main point of my post is regarding the cancellation of everything which is directly related to her death. Therefore, on topic.
Well you really learn about people in times like these. RIP Lizzie. I thought you were an amazing lady.
I actually agree with you regarding postponements/cancellations. But this thread wasn't created so people could have a rant about the monarchy. Hence why that's moved to the off topic thread. Whether you think there should be a monarchy or not, this thread is to pay tribute to a truly remarkable lady who dedicated her life to public service. So I'm asking you to please keep it respectful on this thread.
I don't feel I'm not being so. As I said, I've nothing against any of them personally (bar Andrew). I actually think the Queen was incredibly dignified in the way she conducted her role for 70 years and had a lot of time for her personally. But that doesn't mean everything should be shut down for days on end. Why can't people attend comedy shows or sporting events two days after shes died? It's completely disproportionate. In fact it's worse than that; it's an unelected elite telling us peasants how and when we should behave in the way that they think we should.
Dont think the royal family were the ones who came up with it tbf. Think they just said it’s up to individual governing bodies what they want to do. Just went to my barbers and he’s shutting for 9 days from Monday or something because of it, seems a bit OTT
A bit?! Not sure I agree that royal family had nothing to do with it. Personally think it's more likely than not that they've put the pressure on. At least we'll get a bank holiday out of it. Something back for ruining my holiday I suppose lol.
Like it or not, you live in a country which has been a monarchy for more than a thousand years. It’s a big, big deal.
He probably just wants an excuse to close and go on holiday, **** knows. Im already meant to be on holiday if it’s a week on Monday, better get it back. As for the Queen she seemed like a good person, though my opinion is probably swayed by watching the Crown which is most likely nothing like what she’s actually like. I never really paid much attention to the royal family, not fussed about them or the monarchy.
On the contrary I think this is the perfect time to have the discussion about the monarchy (I wouldn't use the word rant albeit I know I can come across that way). It should have been ditched years ago as it sets an awful example that some people are born better than others. Really don't understand how people support that nation. In the modern world it feels like one area we've lagged behind as it's from a more primitive part of mankind's history. But I always understood it cos the Queen deserved to see her reign through to the end given the dedication and dignity she's shown throughout. Now she's gone though it's absolutely time to have that discussion.
Being a monarchy a thousand years ago made sense. Now? Not so much. I understand it's a big deal to many many people. That doesn't mean we should shutdown everything for everyone though because life and society has moved on from unelected monarchs being god like figures (or should have at least). Are we all gonna get super excited and have a **** when Charles gets coronated just cos we've done it for years? I'd rather set myself on fire tbh. Good chance tens of thousands die this winter because they can't afford to warm their home or feed themselves. Yet a 96 year old woman dying is a great tragedy which makes the world stop. I repeat; her life is worth no more than any of ours in my view.
I'm on my hols atm but am cutting it short as its not worth spending 150 notes on a hotel if I can't do **** all. I had a lot of time for the Queen despite being anti monarchy in general. She seemed a good person and did well to stay out of controversial matters.
RIP and all that, but I'm totally with Libby on this one. We don't need a monarchy, it represents everything that is unfair about our society and other than the fact that her family have lost her and are rightly grieving, that's where it ends for me. She was just a face on a stamp for me, a symbol of something that should never exist in any society with aspirations to meritocracy and I'll be glad when the last of the whole rotten gang step down from public life.
It is such a shame that what was a good thread earlier today has be ruined. Perhaps it's an indictment of our 'modern, progressive society' - where bigoted, insensitive selfishness prevails over human decency. Who knows, but it's very sad nevertheless.
Agree with everything you have said. I’ve held back a bit with my views to avoid pissing people off. You know how I would hate to irritate anyone on here… It is actually the perfect time to debate this very valid argument, although at the same time it does feel disrespectful. It’s sad because someone has died, but the reason she is celebrated is that she held a position I believe is deeply wrong.
Royalists can pay respects, mourn and welcome in a new king. On the other hand republicans will feel sadnesses over the passing of a respected and good person who has been present for all of our lives, yet they do not believe in the system she was the centre of. This is obviously very incongruous and it’s difficult for someone who is against the monarchy to take part in celebrating a monarchs life.
