... is immune from the effects of rising costs, rail strikes, games moved for Sky and Sunderland appears to be closer to other Championship grounds than Bristol City That's the gist of an article from Bristol World. https://www.bristolworld.com/sport/...-sunderland-and-cardiff-city-rank-3839107?amp Current average away support: Sunderland - 2,760 Burnley - 2,590 Cardiff City - 1,918 Sheffield United - 1,907 Coventry City - 1,893 Preston North End - 1,787 Birmingham City - 1,771 Middlesbrough - 1,671 Blackburn Rovers - 1,628 West Bromwich Albion - 1,589 Stoke City - 1,584 Watford - 1,492 Blackpool - 1,458 Norwich City - 1,421 Queens Park Rangers - 1,268 Hull City - 1,246 Wigan Athletic - 1,112 Reading - 932 Swansea City - 917 Millwall - 819 Bristol City - 816 Luton Town - 688 Huddersfield Town - 577 Rotherham United - 571
I'm sure I read that Sunderland will clock up the most away miles in the Championship. The level of our away support never ceases to amaze me really. I think our nearest away game is Hull, which is still 150ish miles, two and a half, maybe 3 hours away.
Never really gets a mention how far our fans travel, but Newcastle fans get a good mention, what time they set off, how many miles it is for them.
And to be honest those numbers aren't a true reflection for us as it would be much higher if the grounds catered for us, I'm quite sure we would take more fans to most away games if we were allocated more tickets, we sell or allocation every time, so realistically our numbers would be a lot higher
It's the consistency that's impressive. Various clubs have spurts when they take good numbers away, I remember Wigan supporters, when they were winning in L1, posting/boasting about their numbers .. ... and Charlton fans, at Wembley, thought they matched our support despite living next door. But we just keep turning out year after year no matter how bad things get or how many times we've trudged out of Wembley ... ... if only the club can match our efforts.
Anyone know a site that gives attendance figures incl. away numbers for all matches? I’d be interested in working out a miles per fan per year figure.
Having a bit of a mare here.... OK, so apart from boro and Huddersfield, Hull is closest Aquaduct moment?
One of the relevant things as well is that I would guess...and it is only a guess.... a larger percentage of our loyal fans live away from the area. That's the way I've always perceived it.....I don't know whether I'm right or wrong......but I have this idea that a significant number of our away attendance don't actually travel from Sunderland area to the matches, they're dotted around all over the place, which in many cases, makes the travel time a lot less for some. Of course, we always have the longer journey to the home matches!
