A very disappointing turn out for the Royal Lodge (1:50) to start proceedings at HQ. £70,888 for the winner is clearly not enough for more local trainers to walk their horse to the track. Is Flying Honours some sort of Pegasus? Granted the Buick/Appleby combination have a phenomenal strike rate at the course this year but the odds on favourite did win a Listed race last time against five rivals he was expected to beat. The runner-up that day was one of Balding’s, and today’s runner from that yard, The Foxes, should pick up at least £6,700 just for crossing the finishing line. The pace angle here is obviously Dubai Mile, who has made all to win his last two and needs to improve considerably on that unless the Godolphin horse fails to fire. The cynic in me thinks that Greenland, from Ballydoyle, is here as a marker after losing his maiden tag at the fourth attempt at Roscommon. A good turnout for the first of the Group 1 races, the Cheveley Park Stakes (2:25) with the field dominated by a couple. The sponsors are looking to get their money back with dual winner Juliet Sierra, who collected an open looking Dick Poole last time; however, whilst she has scope that bare form does not look the obvious stepping stone to Group 1 glory. The stable’s other runner, Lezoo, has not been seen since winning the Princess Margaret but was beaten on her penultimate start by the re-opposing Mawj (Maylandsea last). Saeed bin Suroor’s filly subsequently only ran fourth in the Lowther, a form line which makes winner Swingalong one of the key contenders here if she can go on from there. Arguably the form pick is Meditate, unbeaten in four starts until running into Tahiyra in the Moyglare. The drop back to six furlongs should not be an issue as she won the Albany (beating Mawj) at that trip. The Ballydoyle filly could well be the pacesetter today and I can see her being there to be shot at by hold-up horse TRILLIUM, winner of the Flying Childers and the Molecomb over five on her last two starts but now stepping back up to the six furlongs over which she won her maiden (Swingalong fourth). The other Group 1, the Middle Park (3:00), looks a little competitive despite eight potentially facing the starter. It is hard to make any case for the Mohammed duo Never Just A Dream and Once More For Luck but one of them might manage to pick up some money for getting in the first six given their optimistic names. Yarmouth winner Zoology goes in the ‘could be anything’ bracket and could be the male equivalent of Tahiyra but I simply do not see it. Blackbeard has plundered a couple of decent prizes in France in his last two starts, beating Persian Force and The Antarctic in the Prix Morny last time and I cannot see why either of them should reverse that form on the same terms. Mischief Magic collected the Sirenia Stakes on the kitty litter at Kempton last time to follow up facile win in a novice race. While he has to be respected because he is clearly better than the bare form and connections have a great record here this year, he might not be as good as his stablemate Noble Style, who won the Gimcrack where Karl Burke’s MARSHMAN was a good second. Prior to that MARSHMAN had slammed an ordinary field in a Thirsk novice event by eight and a half lengths despite carrying a penalty for his debut Ayr win. With just the three runs he looks to have more scope than his two market rivals so I can see the prize heading north to Middleham. Looking on OddsChecker, TRILLIUM is shortening and might end up favourite while MARSHMAN is favourite but Mischief Magic is shortening. So which of them is going to let me down?
Long time since I’ve been on. Apologies. Hope you are all doing well. Little ew lucky 15 for me today. 2.25 New Lezok 3.15 Hay Gisburn 3.40 New Totally Charming 4.23 Ripon Chuvelo Have a good all. Best of luck with yours
Having read Richard Fahey’s column on SportingLife.com today, I actually think that his best chance of a winner could turn out to be six year old Absolute Dream in the 5:10 at Chester. Just the small problem that it is a hold-up horse at a track where that tactic is not very profitable, it won the ‘Leger Legends’ Mickey Mouse race last time and it has not won off this high a mark since 2018. Looking for something that is not a short-ish price favourite, I have ended up at Ripon in the 3:48 Ripon Cathedral City of The Dales handicap. Six year old MARK’S CHOICE should be considered something of a course specialist having won here 7 times from 18 attempts. The most recent of those wins was at the end of August off a mark of 81. He subsequently finished stone last in the Ayr Silver Cup with a 5lb penalty effectively running off a mark of 88. It would still be a career high to win today off 85 but he receives 12lb from eight year old favourite Justanotherbottle (including allowances) who won this last year (3 wins from 4 attempts here). Other than the one four year old this race looks like an old age sprinters reunion!
Thanks, I hadn't seen that. I've been focusing more on Newmarket and Listowel today. His mark has dropped significantly, but she's got a good jockey on board. If I had seen before, maybe I would have bet because you know I like to bet at high odds, but not now. I don't look for horses that run their second race after WS deliberately, only when I come across one of them when I look the card then I get interested and try to see if, for me, he has a chance. I'll watch the race with interest. If you have any money on her, I hope he wins.
Best ride I've seen for ages in the 1.55 at Listowel with Sam Ewing producing a power-packed last 1/2 mile to get Ambitious Fellow up on the line. Fantastic stuff and well worth watching the replay when it is available
Always like to have a crazy bash at the Cambridgeshire (15:40), and my selection for a very modest flutter is Protagonist. William Haggas has never won this but has a good chance today. I like this one best of his two entries. Tom Marquand on board for the Haggas yard. 12/1 best price at time of writing, therefore E/W best option. Good luck with your wagers, folks!
Parx 22.20 Green Up 4/1 Looks a high class filly in the making, 2nd on debut and won all 4 since eased down including breaking the course and distance track record last time. Big step up in class but I think shes up to it based on some form lines and she gets a decent few pounds from Secret Oath who is the best on paper but has had a hard season. Inside post is a slight negative but she has plenty of natural speed to find a decent position.
