Live, I've seen the likes of St. John, Hunt, Dalglish, Rush and a host of others for us and other great English and European sides, so best ever is a tough ask - but I've never seen anyone score so many different types of goal so frequently as Gnasher. There was a period when everything he tried just went in. It all depends on context of course, and people will have their own ideas of who's best.
It'd be fascinating to see him back, but I don't know if it would work out. He's not far off 36, so whether he's still got what it takes I don't know. Speed wasn't his thing, of course - and he was so bloody-well determined to win at all costs, and that's an attitude we could do with atm.
He did for sure. His first season his shoot early shoot often policy missed the target a lot more but in his "big" season he did score everything. Like salahs first season. Everything event in.
That was my point. I wondered whether he'd be too slow now, then stated that it wasn't his thing anyway so he might still have a couple of years left in him.
Here was always quick in mind and acceleration but lacked pace. IMO, that would be great for us. Bobby was always the same too.
When he left us.... I recall one gaol which was a breakaway the length of the park and he barely kept ahead of a slow arse but daring them to foul, he has to be dead slow now That is a point for sure. It depends on position and ability to use that instead of running 20 yards in a race.
We wouldn't be putting Suarez on the wing, he'd be central like Bobby. Not heartening anyway, would hamper Nunez and Jota development
Still have to run a cb at some point. Like kane, he's slowing down and slowing down but has 6 goals in prem this season out of 7 games by scoring off the bad teams like forest, leicester, cheslea and wolves. 4 of those 6 are off headers which shows what he is about. Forwards who know where the goal is can make that move over 2 yards to have space. Others like say Owen who relied on pace to get clear don't have as long a career. Suarez career length along with atletico proved he had it.
The world ran for messi. Messi's stats of km per match was always disgusting. He ran when it was time to run and otherwise he is a passenger. That doesn't mean he wasn't plain better than everyone though. Ronaldo ran his knees in to the ground dedicating himself to beating him to accolades.
Tbf if I was manager of the greatest player to every play the game, I’d also say to him don’t waste energy running around, I’ll make sure we sign and pay other players to do that stuff and leave you to score 80 goals a season
"Best Ever" is a hard expression to use. The rules, tactics, even balls and boots are different in each era and so is the training and preparation. Gone are heavy leather balls and thick sturdy boots to be replaced by high tech fabrics and light pingy balls. Very different technique to control. Can only compare against same generation. Suarez certainly will never go down in the long term history books as Messi's equal... But for a season or two, absolutely, and as I said above, it wasn't just his performances it's the way he also converted the players around him. By pure will of character he even turned Studge temporarily into a world class striker. He was never as much a show-boater as say Ronaldo, he was more practically applied and I've never seen a player score goals when there is no clear path quite so often. Other great players had great teams around them. Suarez with us didn't have many great players.
but he won nothing for us so he had a decent season for us, so what? at barca he was there with messi, neymar etc etc etc etc. of course he got goals and a lot of them
Its a real shame he wasn’t born 5 years later and we signed him under klopp. Similar for gerrard. Would have been fascinating to see how they both would have played in the team of 2 years ago while they were in their prime. Suarez in the middle of mane and Salah would have been a joy. Not sure where you’d play gerrard. I guess naturally he’s go rcm replacing Hendo but then almost stiffles TAA from that side so maybe have him more box to box on the left cm tucked in?
Gerrard would scowl at trent and the little **** wouldn't wander off his line cos Gerrard would be the one wandering.
I've always thought it a shame Kuyt couldn't be coached by Klopp. I think Kuyt would have been a level above what he was with Klopp at the helm. Maybe still wouldn't have been world-class, but he struck me as the type of player that would have been so much better utilized with Klopp as he seems to fit his mentality so well.
