I've got to be different!!!? My memory goes back to the late 40's and Journey Into Space. I'd sit by the fire with a poker in my hand in case a nasty came through the door. Well,I was 9. Brilliant radio series.I bought the series some years ago!!
Whilst not everything I have posted here meets my original criteria of 'Iconic' I believe that in the 70s this genuinely was
Jasper Carrot. Forgotten these days but a brilliant comedian. Ahead of his time. This is just comedy gold
There was a weird thing about 10 years ago where all the standups who were third-tier panellist on Mock the Week kept slagging Carrott off, almost always in the same breath as they were bemoaning Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle being axed Slight issue there: Comedy Vehicle was easily the worst thing Lee's name has ever been attached to, as much like Frankie Boyle's Tramadol Nights it mainly came across as nasty and mean-spirited for the sake of it
Stewart Lee has always been hit and miss for me but no doubt the bloke is very intelligent with his comedy. Not sure why they slagged off Jasper Carrott. You have to look at the intent of the comedian.
I think it comes down to a couple of reasons (feel free to add air quotes around that) The obvious one is the BBC were running a Jasper Carrott Best Of around the same time, meaning that it created the easiest of oppositions in the minds of people who thought the BBC only wanted safe comedy so pointed at the bloke from Birmingham - although it also has to be said that, around the same time, the Grauniad repeatedly kept doing this irritating thing where any discussion of any comedy pre-2000, off the top of my head Bill Hicks and Monty Python, was riddled with their comment of saying how they weren't that great really and people should move on (presumably to Stewart Lee...)
Mike Harding gave up the comedy to concentrate on his folk music , he was on the circuit at the same time as Carrott
It was the discussion of Jasper Carrott that reminded me of Phil Cool, they were linked in some way (Carrott may have "discovered" him, or produced him or both or similar), and when I think of Phil Cool I can't but help think of the Aquaphibian sketch. So I was about to post it and found that you had. Of course it helps if you grew up with Stingray, but that sketch is pure genius and pretty much only Phil Cool could pull it off with his facial expressions. I remember when I first saw it I was laughing so hard I actually did fall off the chair.
When I'm thinking of jaw dropping moments within a series, this comes to mind. It was just so unexpected and brilliantly executed, completely out of place but somehow appropriate at the same time. It was a brilliant series, but this sequence in particular was amazing. Yes you needed to have been brought up with Camberwick Green, but I suspect that most of the adult audience of Life on Mars were also the kiddie audience of Camberwick Green.
The Wheeltappers & Shunters Social club, Colin Crompton was the twit with the bell and Benard Manning the resident comedian.
Other iconic TV themes that come from artist tracks ... and for those in the ITV London region in the 70s, your 'report to the TV to see some politnik get roasted' signal Ah, the sunday rituals (11am - midday : Thunderbirds, Midday to 1PM : folks get lunch ready while watching Brian Walden on the attack, 1PM - 2PM L eat,. 2PM - 3PM : The big match. 3PM onwards ; footie - if weather + daylight conditions allow) . < sigh >
