He never puts his hands above his head to catch stuff. Basic goalkeeping because you give yourself a significant height advantage. He always tries to catch it by creating a basket with his chest. Why can't this man catch to save his life?

Mate of mine at uni reckons Schmeichel's made a couple of mistakes for you recently. Granted one was the goal you conceded against Burnley, but still...

    He's a Leicester fan btw.

The goal against Burnley was really Bamba's fault really. You should never head the ball across your own box. Kasper did the best he could by punching it away, but put just ended up putting it straight on the strikers head.

Not seen anything to worry me yet. There was the tantrums after conceding, but even they seem to have stopped now. God knows how many times he's saved us though.

Looks like a penalty to me and he does appear to push his hand out (watch it very closely, slow it down if you can).

As for the sending off, not that I am 100% clued up with the rules of the game (like many ref's). He was the only person between the striker and an open goal. Had it been a 'foul' as in a trip on the edge of the box with just the keeper to beat - it would have been a red card, so I can see why he has given it, and it is perhaps the right decision.

If it was a penalty, then it's also a sending off for a professional foul. But do you really think it was deliberate? Looks to me that the force of the ball moved his arm, not that he moved his arm first.

I think it was. I genuinely think he extended his arm to hit the ball. Just a little extra push, at the speed it happens it could be missed which why I say you need to watch it closely, very carefully <ok>

I dont really care whether it was a sending off, it was stupid for rachubka to get lees in that position in the first place and never should have happened.

Thai Canary, since you seem interested, there are 7 deadly sins - 7 mandatory sending offenses, two of which have the acronyms DOGSO-F and DOGSO-H:

Denying an Obvious Goal Scoring Opportunity - Foul/Handling.

Lees was sent off for DOGSO-H.

The handling infraction was changed from intentional to deliberate. Deliberate includes having one's hands where they should not be - an unusual stance. Hard to really see what Lees actually did but there is no doubt his hand is way out away from his body. For me, if his hand was just way out there, he could not get it out of the way and he did not move it to block the ball, then while it is handling, I think the send off is harsh.

It was a sending off, his hand prevented a goal which left the ref no alternative. Does it matter though? It was a penalty no matter what so 2-0 down with 11 men we were playing awful and were never going to get anything out of the game. The annoying thing was the keeper error that caused it in the first place.

I was at the Peterborough game, they went down to 10 men and I thought here we go, time to thrash them and after we took the lead it was Peterborough who looked more like scoring and indeed they did making it 2-2. We were lucky that day to take three points, I just wish we showed a bit more steel when we go down to 10 men, you would think we would be used to playing with 10 men this season by now

Ristac, I posed the question to a referee listserve group and have read a few responses.

Firstly Interpretation of the Laws of the Game and Guidelines for Referees in FIFA's LOTG 2011/12 does not go into this in much detail.

The USSF Advice to Referees includes the following two sentences:

"The send-off offense for deliberate handling, number 4 under the seven send-off offenses, "denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)," does not require any particular alignment of players for either team, but simply the occurrence of the offense under circumstances in which, in the opinion of the referee, the ball would likely have gone directly into the goal but for the handling."

    This supports your view.

"The referee must remember that many fouls, including deliberately handling the ball, occur in the penalty area and could result in a penalty kick but not a sending-off."

Some have opined that this helps refs to justify not sending off a player where they just could not have been thinking how can I stop this guy scoring even if I commit a foul. The intent of introducing this send off was to discourage the professional foul, going out of own's way to stop the opponent. The "Spirit of the Game" argument supports that idea.

I know this may be waaaaaaaaaaaay more than anyone cares or wants to know, but there it is for those who do.
