Do yourself a favour, save time and money and enjoy the food, people and culture. Stop at Durham and enjoy your stay, then turn round and go home.

10/10 for recognising the quote, but the joke was a bit wasted on me. I haven't lived in Glasgow since the mid 80s, so my local knowledge lets me down.

I take it you have a car?

I would definitely suggest staying at the Crieff Hydro as Pud suggested. That way you can be in Edinburgh in about 80-90 minutes, the east neuk of Fife (St Andrew, Pittenweem etc.) in about an hour and you can explore Perthshire and the Trossachs. I'd suggest Dunkeld and the Hermitage too.

Well it looks the same as the Glasgow one.

The Belgrove Hotel. Still there though it's a fair bit away from the Barras.
