Wigan have a lot of potential, have a decent squad and who cares how many fans they have home or away,
They have no potential... No one will want to be known as the chairman as wigan except the guy who unfortunately has them.
Well I've read some rubbish on this site but this thread beats all,,no club has a divine right to be in the top flight they are there on merit not size or support ,apart from 76 our history is hardly that great. If you compare with Bolton & Blckburn even ,Leeds have a fantastic past but does that give them the right to be there ? Like most things in life you earn the right to what you achieve. If and still a big if we get promotion then we have the right and for no other reason
I generally agree with your post, but don't think 76 was the club's pinnacle. For me 1984 was by far a better achieving year. The 2002/3 season looked rosy too, but alas it was the start of the slippery slope. I take umbrage that many think the FA Cup is the be all and end all of Saints. To add to most voices, we may have been a founding member of the Premiership and it is good that we have had many different clubs in it since its foundation (loved Hull mixing it up a couple seasons ago)....otherwise we should just rubber stamp the foreign owners goal of ending promotion/relegation.
The original post is a bit mean spirited ...but I was looking at the relegation places this morning, and I'll admit; I was happy that all those 3 may go down this year. If we go up I'd rather play a West Ham or Cardiff, Derby, Hull who's fans are excited about playing in that Divison, than a clubs that seem to going backwards in the Prem.
I think that some people are being extremely arrogant. The fact is, Wigan, Blackburn and Bolton are in the Premier League and we're not. Wigan's support I have to admit is woeful but I don't care to be honest. I still respect the fact are still in the top division and are there on merit, Bolton and Blackburn in particular.
I have nothing against Wigan at all,and i quite admire how they have managed to stay in the Premier league for the past few years. Dave Whelan seems to be quite a decent bloke for a football chairman, and Martinez tries to get his teams playing good football. Unfortunately i fear they are doomed this season. Blackburn on the other hand i dont like, their owners have made them into a laughing stock, and they could also go down quite easily this season. Bolton have been in the Premier league on merit for the past few years, have had really tough games to start the season, and i would be very suprised if they went down this season. Wigan,Blackburn, and probably one of the promoted sides to make way for Saints,West Ham and Reading or Birmingham. My tips are crap though,i thought Newcastle were certs for relegation pre season.
This is probably a post that doesn't represent most fans views... Yes - we are pleased with our current position But we shouldn't be getting all up ourselves and saying that other clubs aren't 'proper clubs'. Those teams have earned the right to be in the Premier League and until we get there they are still better than us!
Wigan are pretty poor to be fair, though I do admire Whelan and Martinez. They are one of the teams who consistently bore me on Match of the Day, along with Blackburn. Bolton I actually think are quite a decent side but bore me at times as well. I agree with CBK though, replace Blackburn, Wigan and Bolton with the likes of Saints, Leeds and Forest and the bottom half of the table will be a lot more exciting like it was back in the 90s. On a brighter note though, Norwich have been very entertaining.
Wigan isn't a proper club it's more of a rugby club,it was only formed in 1932. I think Bolton and Blackburn are proper football clubs ok they can't fill their stadiums but they've both got a rich history you can't say that about Wigan, yes they've earnt their right to be in the EPL but they are cleary punching above their weight.
27 years in the top flight, league cup final,2nd in div 1,in Europe a few times,an FA cup final...not that good but not that bad either.
Every club is playing at the level they deserve. It's due to something called promotion and relegation. Next season we will be in the Premier League and we will deserve to be there - we are currently playing football way above everyone else in the league.
Farnborough is more of a football club than Wigan will ever be,when I mentioned the year they were formed I was just pointing out that it's a relatively young club for the premiership,in fact they are the youngest club in the prem. AFC Wimbledon is a proper club even though it was only formed in 2002,why?Because of the passion their fans have...I don't see any passion when I watch Wigan play, all I see is a half empty stadium with faded rugby lines on the pitch...I'm sorry but this club doesn't belong in the prem, yes they've done well to get there...I think they should focus on Rubgy to be honest not football. They don't really have a plan for the future either they just settle for relegation battles every season.
wow, very arrogant post, why shouldn't wigan bolton blackburn etc be in the premiership. They got there by merit, ffs blackburn won the premier league. Wigan have also been unfairly labelled, they play good, entertaining football under martinez and are the perennial under dogs, much like we were for a good time in the top flight. We have no god given right to be in the premier league, you get there on the pitch, not by fan base.
The problem with Wigan is that it's not a proper football club it's a rugby club... Their stadium is never full, the pitch has got two different lines on it and most of their fans don't show a lot of passion.
