not a cottage its an end terrace "local authority" he had a heart attack just after covid started [ June 2020 ]and had to give up the farm, stone built. USED TO HAVE 2000 ewes now has 60 but building up!!!
The house was /is part of the local authority modernization plan. Because he was a tenant farmer he got the first available house near his previous residence it is a 3 bed end terrace with a large garden front back and side [ big enough for at least 5 caravans and some spare space at front and back [ only has a 4/5 berth caravan I stay overnight in it whilst visiting! ] Certainly was in right place right time! Gas and oil are available . most properties are open fire/ aga types / wood burner?
Funny didnt get to ask about about solar heating / water! A few houses do have panels ...

RR - I'm no expert on the relative costs of different fuels pal, though I do know LPG systems are at the top end of the spectrum. It's just that I was involved more than 15/20 years ago on the mechanical principles of alternative energy sources. Solar had taken off and heat pumps were supposed to be the next big thing.

At that time all the effort was going into geothermal (ground source) heat pumps but the huge installation costs were prohibitive and made them a vanity project given the plentyful and cheap supply of fossil fuels at the time. Air source HP offered more realistic installation costs but they really need to be installed as part of new build projects. The high cost of later conversions from already installed gas/oil fired systems makes them options for the more geek/vanity/eco members of society.

The current surge in world gas and oil prices brought on by the Ukraine conflict has once again brought HP systems to the fore. As the world adjusts and these fuel prices actually drop as they are already doing, curent enthusiasm will wane. Only government legislation to bring pressure on the major builders to install in new build projects will be effective because conversion costs to existing properties will remain high.

In the years of 2010 to 2015 in the area south of Bristol there was a large number of geo thermal houses / small estates / developments constructed ..a friend on the Mendips had one of these properties [ "affordable" built solely for local inhabitants with CHARTER THAT ALLOWS either rent 100% [ no purchase ever ] part rent part equity .. [when you leave 3 different valuations]. 49.9% / 50.1% was best split! house valued and next tenants take on the 49.9% original ones get a cash boost toward buying elsewhere! on + equity difference.
They had a large tank of "warm?" water in the ground outside their back door fed by water that travelled x metres below ground......... borehole .. dont know the mechanics of it

In the 1960's we were told the oil would all be gone within 10 years
In the early 1970's we were told there would be another ice age in the next 10 years
In the late 1970's the meddling and worthy Prince Charles told the whole world that all the glaciers would be gone by the year 2000
In the 1980's we were told acid rain would destroy the worlds crops within 10 years
In the 1990's we were told the Ozone Layer would be gone within 10 years
In the late 1990's we were encouraged to all buy diesel powered vehicles as they were better for the environment and our health.
In the early 2000's we were told the Polar ice caps would be gone before 2020
In the 2010's we've been lectured by an uninformed Swedish college drop out and by politicians with privileged lives that we need to cut world CO2 emissions.

The only thing to happen since all of these false prophesies were made, is we've paid increased taxes to prevent things that haven't and won't happen !

Quite a bit of TIC there Angelic! .....lol .....

In 1966 I was offered an opportunity by my Uncle in Newport on Tay to learn welding and to get a job on the new industry up there [ North Sea ] to do with the pipe lines needed to service those new fangled things being built called oil rigs!

Ice age .. well some "donut might have said that..1970's but my interest at the time 1972 verged on hydro geology and I learned 1 thing .. the term ice age is correct we have had 3 or 4 but the 11,000 year events are called inter glaciations! and they take quite a while to build up but depart much quicker! Bit like the sunspot cycle!

Acid rain ... it does affect some of the worlds crops but only maybe 0 .00001% all rain even the drizzle we currently have at this moment is likely acidic [ carbonic acid ! ] It would likely make sense that if the CO2 increased air gets warmer so has more moisture, greater reaction would occur and more [ stronger?? ] carbonic acid may fall.
Certainly when a volcano erupts sulphur mixed with water a nasty acid is formed, but nowt to do with global warming!

Ozone .. Ozone depletion is and has been "problematic" OZONE stops harmful rays whether it would dissapear totally? ...?

Diesel ... science moves on and tests etc have indicated elements of burnt diesel being harmful. The expansion of diesel engines was encouraged as the imbalance of Petrol to heavier oils would need to be addressed.
BURNING any fossil fuel could be deemed detrimental to health!

Polar ice caps ... since before the early 2000's concern on the icecaps were very worrying In the early 80's [80/81 ]we discussed at long length the diminishing size of central european glaciers and chunks of Antartica size of Wales ? BREAKING OFF and the possibility of a north west passage! It was after an Exped to Austria! They are slowly continuing on this downward spiral...

MY thoughts as opposed to being an opinion is that had we not embarked on a "save the planet strategy" albeit in a small way in the past 50 years how many of the things you highlight would actually be far worse than now! I have not been to the POLES but certainly Central European glaciers I have witnessed have lost 100's of metres of their size / volumne since 1977.

I'd have more concerns with the use and the disposal of plastics being washed into our rivers & seas.. The giant companies guilty whom insist on using or producing, should be forced to clean or pay to clean up what is really and environment issue.. More than anything else, that really p!ss's me off

RAC complaining about the price of diesel at the forecourt when wholesale prices of diesel and unleaded are now roughly the same!! Most garages around north Somerset and Bristol are showing a difference of around 22p per litre; not a bad little profit at our expense!

I was in London over the weekend; the cheapest diesel I saw was £1.57p - significantly lower than it is around here. It seems as though they literally have us all over a barrel!

And water companies complaining of drought and imposing hosepipe bans, whilst not taking any measures to capture our more than ample rainfall, whilst continually dumping untreated sewage into our rivers and seas,

Absolutely more water than needed-but going into their back pockets and not investing in new reservoirs. So wrong.

I’m sure there are some who will try and claim it’s all down to LJ’s stewardship, I’m sure they’ll try and convince us, and themselves, it’s somehow linked to his time at the club <laugh><laugh><laugh>

Change all the words Would to Could and you may be more correct. A lot of things have changed. Hairsprays (aerosols) was a big thing in the 80’s for the Ozone layer. How many people in 2023 are still using them compared to the 80’s.
A lot of these predictions the world has improved on.

The diesel cars I will give you that one, that was poor research on the government at the time. Then petrol emissions cleaned up a bit more, proved that things can be made cleaner for the environment.

Best prediction on this thread though has to be being told not to listen to mainstream but listen to someone who claimed to be the son of god <laugh>

It’s also a lot of bollocks being talked by a lot of people over the years that had little or nothing to back it up with
And none of the predictions made and the scaremongering that went with it came true

Or listen to an organisation like the BBC that employ's & covers up pedophiles, are biased and hypocrites.....Maybe you prefer phone tapping tabloids....... If you want to stay blinkered (gullible) and follow the mass........ Go for it <laugh>
NB. I don't care who he claims to be, doesn't stop him from having some valid views.. :emoticon-0105-wink:

He may, or may not, have valid views, but once he starts claiming to be the son of god, he kind of loses any credibility he may have had.

And the likes of the BBC does? <doh>
I think that was a fair few years ago... many (including celebs, football managers, etc) have gone down the same path ..not my bag but each to their own.. not sure why it loses credibility.. didn't stop Glenn Hoddle being a good player and manager with good views of the game....not imo anyway..
All a bit nieve and narrowminded IMO..
