I’ve just finished watching the League 1 playoff final.

Early in the season I heard a summariser say that Wednesday had assembled a team to get out of League 1. The inference was as clear: big and strong but lacking the skill that would be needed if they did go up.

    He wasn’t wrong.

Barnsley tried the play a bit and it was a tight game even after they had a player.sent off at 49 minutes. The commentators thought it harsh but it was a Kung Fu movie tackle: horizontal and airborne. OK, there wasn’t much contact but it was uncontrolled and dangerous. Right decision.

Barnsley held their own at least to the 90 minute mark but gradually the extra man showed. Wednesday were able to modify their tactics from hoofing the ball into the box from 50 yards to hoofing it into the box from 30 yards. Barnsley had a gilt edged chance from a break-away late in the first 15 minutes of extra time but missed it.

That allowed Wednesday to win it in the very last minute with a stupendous diving header, a rare moment of outstanding skill.

You might say that from the Championship’s point of view, the right team won. Wednesday brought 40,000, Barnsley only 20,000.

I was there at Wembley ( with the prawn sandwich lot in the neutral area ). Served a couple of purposes not least to enjoy a day out at Wembley with no pressure and to exorcise the demons from our last visit but it was also good to catch up with fellow club secretaries from across L1 (we always get invited to the PO final). The match could easily have gone either way and as you say Barnsley had a excellent chance late on. The atmosphere was brilliant and probably the noisiest I have been in when SWFC scored . With 96 points I think the right team got promoted in third place in the end!

Did you have your Argyle blazer on....proudly of course....with no smirking because little Argyle had made it without the play-offs.

If I had been you Lyndie I would have walked around with the League Winners Cup under my arm all afternoon. Oh and with a hat on that said 101.

Glad you got invited and well deserved I’m sure. There aren’t many clubs where the manager knows what a Company Secretary does, let alone acknowledge what he does in all his public pronouncements.

Mind you, I stand my assertion. Best teams in that league last year were us, Ipswich and Barnsley, in that order.

and in football no one really understands what the club secretary does - there are probably as many variations to the job description (if there is one) as there are clubs! btw, I am the club secretary, rather than the company secretary which in theory is very different.

I did point out to a few people that it seemed like a lot of fuss to go to, when we wrapped it up at a canter a few weeks ago. In fairness a lot of people came over and were v complimentary about us and the season - even the Ipswich people said well done (perhaps through gritted teeth!)

Oops slip of the keyboard there, company not club. But it's true. At most clubs you hear about the owner and the manager and no-one in between. It's a much more professional and structured approach at Argyle.

The engraver had an easy time at Wembley today.....he had already engraved Manchester on the cup before the game started.

What a ludicrous penalty..... in fact, what a poorly refereed game. Several bad challenges unpunished and at least one real penalty overlooked.

The penalty was poor but you cannot blame the Ref for giving it. As stupid as it is it is the rules and the Ref had no option. I believe they are looking at the rule again for next season and it could well be binned which will be the right decision. I didn't watch all of the match just mainly the second half. There was a fair amount of diving going on or rather easy falling down with an added clutch of a limb. It must be hard for the Ref to have to decide if there was even any contact at all in some of the cases and we of course see a dozen replays on the tele. If players do get kicked hard and properly fouled then it is there own fault if they get nothing as a result. Stop piling it on and cheating and the Ref might just give what is due when it's due.
