It's rumoured they may have come in anyway just to protect the money and payments for the armaments they sent us.
Personally I have more respect for the Commonwealth helping us to save democracy.

They only declared war against the Nazi's cos we declared war on the Japanese - which forced their hand.

The funniest (in a bad way) movie I saw was the one about the capture of the U-boat which had the German encryption machine on board. All done by us in the war, apparently done the the American's in the film. And you just know that the American kids will belive the hollywood version.

Cool we need a thread to whinge about something as we are all so happy at the moment.
Lets have a go at the Yanks.

The war of independence wasn't us against the American people, most of them were still British anyway!
It was a few, extremely rich individuals decided they didn't want to pay their taxes.
One of them was a local lad too. :p
Whats changed in all this time?
Nothing their rich now use lawyers to avoid paying taxes.
    A country built on greed.

They were only interested after being attacked and after making a profit from Europe through WW1, as well.

Defending democracy? Only after the $.

I don't know much about this, but didn't they have the French amongst others fighting for them as well?

U-571 was the movie. Matthew McConnahay saving the war... with his shirt off probably

And an interesting fact, the real U571 was destroyed off of Ireland by a 'Short Sunderland' Flying Boat. Read into that what you will, but if it goes in line with the movie, it was Sunderland who won ze war by sinking that sub!

A Short Sunderland also captured the only U-boat to surrender to an aircraft. Another one for us as well

    Cheers MackemsRule,

For what it's worth when I was at school I was taught of the contributions made by what was then the British Empire. Many of my father’s generation went to Asia & Europe never to return. I've been to Monte Casino were a number of my family are buried. Very somber reading when you take note of their ages & it being so far away from home.
Many of the young here fail to understand the sacrifices made by their forefathers as there generation has not experienced conflict as has the UK.
Attached is an interesting table which shows the percentage of deaths to population.

    Movies?

Did you ever see Memphis Belle? My Uncle flew out of England on the B17s depicted in the film. Highest mortality rate of any service in the US forces. He survived the War bot not the peace. 25 missions had to be flown before reassignment. Few made it. Shot down in his 20th mission, three months later he was back in the air. Happily. He survived, came home to Chicago and 5 years later threw himself in front of a train. Sensitive subject for many gentleman.

Fortunately I don't mind the dramatisation of certain historical events as long as they are relatively accurate. The thing is with the young of today the only thing some of them understand about history is if they've seen it in a movie as they often can't sorry don't read! (yet probably have 10A* exams?).

in 1939 th uk firms gov uk individuals owned approx 25% of the usa...the usa were well paid for those crappy ships...they got land in the usa and islands in the pacific and indian ocean for air bases......it was hitler who declared war on the usa as part of the axis...the d day landings were partly about stopping russia(playing the long game)..no country is altruistic its all about self interest.....they also got secret info on jet engine, plastique, short wavelength radar and probably the most important early work on the feasability of atomic bomb(google the tizzard mission)It was probably the british advances short wave radar that shortened the war considerably anywayif the toffs in the airforce had not stopped hitler we would be speaking russian now.
