Apparently due to "budget constraints" they didn't show a highlights show over the last few days and won't be doing another one until 2nd week in January. Word on the street is they won't take up an option to show Football League highlights next season. Got to pay for the Olympics and Alan Hansen's salary somehow I guess.
That's a pain in the arse. I hate the show because it's terrible, presentation is poor as are presenters (Clem being the worst in his little features) but the highlights on the BBC website, I always watch for every team.
Getting the most viewers is all that matters, the Prem is a big cash cow for anyone that can get rights to show it. It makes business sence to milk it for all it's worth. Hence why they show it first. So infact it is Tv's fault the Prem swallows up every other league before it. They are the ones that have made it how itis today anyways.
The FLS is a joke of a programme. Thing that makes me laugh is the lady they have who reads out the txts etc, she has a glass wall between her and Claridge
its another case of the bbc not appreciating what its got. Put the show on a reasonably time, don't let it clash with the Prem coverage and have a repeat on Sunday as well.
All BBC spend their cash on is MOTD and dancing on whatever programmes. Spose it'll be dancing on fire soon.
The BBC should scrap the licence fee & get some adverts, afterall its become as clueless as the rest of freeview+ now.
I think that there are two underlying reasons. 1. the new BBC director does not give a toss about sport therefore it is an area where a lot of money can be saved quickly if they are willing to just pick up snooker and darts. 2. I suspect that the government pressurised the BBC into these cuts rather than face being privatised. Therefore by doing so Murdoch and his mates get stronger and can get some return from there support of the government.
As I've said before, this is nothing new. For months now the contract for the Football League package which the BBC currently hold has been up for renewal, as the current deal ends in May, but the BBC haven't shown any inclination to get involved with talks. I'm slightly surprised that ITV, C5 or ESPN (or even Sky, so that they'd have the full FL packages) haven't yet stepped in, but maybe they're holding out to the last minute to try and get the cheapest deal possible.
I was a bit bored the other afternoon and so I decided to email the Beeb, via the complaints contact form on their web site, about the (lack of) coverage of league football over the Christmas period. I got this back - I didn't outright accuse them of bias, although I did remark that it seems, to the media, there is no football life outside of the PL.
hopefully get promoted and not put up with FLS! although we never used to get good coverage on MOTD when we were in prem, broadcasters its seems like most are not interested in teams below london!
Yeah, I guess it's quite possible that they wouldn't be allowed to. I'm pretty sure I'm right in saying that C5 are ditching the Europa League after this season (I think ITV have snapped up their package instead), so if their finances allow, then they could well be an option.
How much of ITV is owned by SKY? , I know SKY had to back track on buying it all. But how much do they still own?.
According to wikipedia, BSkyB own 17.9% of ITV plc, purchased back in November 2006. But it is wikipedia, so don't take that as gospel.
Whenever it happens, if it happens, within 6 months you'll be wishing to Le God they'd never done it. The quality of TV maybe pretty low now, but you won't believe how low it can go. The BBC is the yardstick by which every other TV/radio broadcaster is judged, mainly because it does not rely on advertising. It doesn't have to chase viewers with the same zeal as commercial broadcasters. Ask a representative from ITV and they will NOT want the BBC using advertising, because 1] there is only so big a pot of advertising revenue, and the BBC would take a mighty chunk of that from day one, as every company rushed to be on the new BBC. 2] From an artistic perspective, as mentioned before, the BBC gives every broadcaster a quality in which to be measured by. An ITV representative would not want the artistic quality to drop any further than it already is on its stations. I can certainly imagine SKY wanting the BBC curtailed, but I've alreaady written on the idiocy of having a SKY package, where not only do you pay more than you would for the BBC, but you are advertised to in the process. I hear SKY don't advertise to you during a film. Ha..! And they call that a good feature. How about NO ADVERTISING AT ALL..? That seems to me like the best feature of all.
By putting it on so late and getting bad ratings they will be able to claim it was poor value for the license payer. I hear they may be introducing local footy shows such as Dancing On Skates, or is that an extreme sport? (I'll get me coat)
