i agree with him, its clear we were going in the right direction with the current tactics and policies, verheijen is a very intelligent, experienced international coach and alot of our success in the past year or so is down to him IMO, i think the FAW could do much worse than give the job to him, or at least retain him as assistant and appoint someone who would agree to work within the current setup as it is, as its working.

giggs has been backed / linked to the job, but he'll get another year in at man utd which will tie him up to the end of the 2012/13 season, flynn would be a viable option as well as he is already in the setup as under 21's manager and verheijen himself has put himself and roberts forwards informally on twitter, so there are options...

what are your thoughts as to the who can take us forwards?

I think that while I would much prefer to have a Welshman at the helm, Verheijen is in my view the right choice for now. It's important that just for now, a newcomer is not put in the position of having to take over from Gary Speed. Any such attempt to do so would have the potential to create resentments. As Swamp says, Verheijen has clearly had a lot of influence on the national team and I think he should carry on the ethos of his and Gary's regime.

It's going to be emotional for a while, that's for sure.

It seems a romantised idea that a manager must come from the country he's managing. Wales game came on leaps and bounds under Speed, in such a short time, and the style of play that he was trying to introduce must carry on. I know this is on the Cardiff board to, but, Swansea's ethos changed when Martinez took over, yet it has remained and we have benefitted from it. The manager should suit the the way we play (or want to play), no matter what country he comes from. It would be nice to see Welsh football reveered as much as the world appreciates Welsh rugby <ok>

Hi crcjack and a very happy new year to you. <ok>

Surely it's part of the make-up of every football fan to romanticise a bit? I think most are of the same opinion that we should carry on with what GS started and that Verheijen is best placed to do that. The point I was trying to make was that for a short and tantalising period, we DID have a succesful Welshman at the helm, and he was changing the whole ethos. As part of that revolutionary team, Verheijen should be given the chance to carry on and then, in the fulness of time, and when he feels he's ready to go, leave an ethic for a Welshman to carry on with.

    Happy New year Clingo <ok>

I see you point with sticking to a welshman at the helm, I would love this to. However, being welsh is not the top priority, it should be the style of play and his vision for Wales to play in the future. Toshack was a dinasaur in regards to football, and turned us into a boring team to watch. Speed was a breath of fresh air and made Wales a team to watch and enjoy. Hopefully Giggs will one day become a home grown successor and take over.
In the meantime, with players like Bale, Allen and Ramsey a more passing attacking system should be introduced.

    thanks for replies <ok>

the job apparently paid only a basic £200k a year, with a £1m bonus for qualifying for a tournament. hughes commands a salary of at least 10 times that, absolutely zero chance of him being in the running. as for coleman, he wanted the job last year and eventually joined larissa in greece, god knows why but i dont think he'd be a good choice, its clear to me that someone needs to be promoted from within, or even an appointment of a young inexperienced manager with ideas similar to that of speed.

whats for certain is that were in far better shape for the next manager, there are quality players throughout the team and who knows, with bale one of the best players in the PL and certain to be the subject of a bid from barcelona in the summer, and people like allen and morison improving all the time, we will continue to climb the rankings whoever takes over <ok>

I'm on record at preferring a foreign manager, simply because of the way it has worked at Swansea, having said that, whether the new manager is Welsh or not, what is more important is the style of play that Garry speed has instituted, and what Bale has stated is common sense, and I would like to see the FAW listen to the request that Bale has made, but at the end of the day surely the FAW don't want to upset the apple cart on this, and surely it makes sense to keep the current backroom staff, including Verheijen, I'm all for it, if it ain't broke don't fix it!....

most of us thought speed was the wrong choice as not being good enough i seem to remember so i would not discount Coleman as not being the right man for the job as he may surprise us like Garry did...

Coleman would be a disaster. Sorry. Why should he be welsh. Al that matters is success.

he didnt exactly pull up any trees in his job at coventry, he did well at fulham, not sure how he did at sociedad and now at larissa but i'm not too sure what he'd bring to the role, does he advocate good football? he's welsh, which is good but i think he could be a candidate <ok>

agree swamp as speed was not exactly brilliant at sheff utd and after a slow start he made us a respected side again and if coleman were to get the job some day then i would give him a chance to prove himself.....

the best opption for me would be to change as little as possible so my nod goes to Ver. I base this purley on the fact that who ever comes in will be doomed straight away just because they will be compared to GS from the off. it would not be fair on a new manager to have to deal with that as well as trying to impalment new tatics and coaching systems on players that obviously are happy and playing well under the current systems.

Lets try to keep things ticking over as they have been with the verheijen keeping this as normal as possible and let the players step up and do it for Gary Speed.

I think let him have the job. His comments after Speed's passing, while ill-timed, to me indicated nothing other than a professional desire to get the job done. If he does well, give it to him full time.`
