Kevin Arnott (born September 28, 1958 in Gateshead, England) is an English footballer best known for his career with Sunderland.

Arnott was a talented midfielder with excellent vision and ball control, who came to prominence during Sunderland's First Division campaign in the 1976-77 season. He was one of a trio of young players to emerge that season along with Gary Rowell and Shaun Elliott.

After a loan spell with Blackburn Rovers, he joined Sheffield United (then under the management of former Sunderland player Ian Porterfield) in 1982. He had further loan spells at Blackburn and Rotherham United, but returned to the Blades and remained at the club until 1987. He finished his League career at Chesterfield.

I remember him once scoring a free kick over the wall in to the top right hand corner at the Roker End - the ref said he wasn't ready and made him take it again, so he curled it back over the wall this time in to the top left hand corner!

He was a legend for a few seasons and mention of his name will make blokes of my age very misty eyed!!

Kevin Arnott - the original Gazza.

He was supremely gifted as a player mate and broke into the team around the 1976/7 season (I was a bright eyed 12 year old at the time) along with a certain Shaun Elliot from Haydon Bridge and the man who is Gods own representitive on earth Lord Gary Rowell. 3 local NE lads all coming into the team together. It was brilliant and I'd have all 3 back tomorrow in a whisper.

Arnott had one of the best passing abilities I have ever seen and was a massivley gifted and naturally talented footballer. His free kicks were sublime as well. However, like Gazza I think he just had this massive personality flaw, that meant he couldnt be arsed about his talent and kind of pissed it up the wall. He left SAFC around 1982 and just faded out of the game at the highest level. I'll tell you now, he had one of the best left feet of anyone at the time or since.

Make sure you tell him on monday morning that he is still a legend on Wearside to my generation mate.

Bet he looks **** all like this now though. Lol

one of my favourite players of the time, had huge talent, could pick a pass and on his day would control midfield...never thought he really made the most of his talent, but great player to watch

Kevin Arnott was a real favourite of mine.. However, he was a lad who never quite reached the heights that his undoubted talent warrented...
He has certainly not been forgotten in these parts..<ok>

Cest It sounds like we share our foootball xperience at the same time. Kevin Arnott was a fantastic talent, or seemed so around the time of Elliot, Rowell, Chisolm and Co.
    Never quite made it though.
I saw my first game in 1974 cup winners cup and then watched week in week out from around 1977 until I move South in 2000.
More lows than highs during that period but I look back with real fondness

My first season was the 1974/5 season, going to about 7 or 8 games with my dad. The following year we went to nearly every game and just continued form then on. When I got to 17, it was home an away for almost the whole of the next 15 years and Ive been goimng to the game with the same lads since I was 18 (47 now).

Great times even if the footy was pish most of the time. Lol

You mention Gordon Chisholm Imarriedamag who was one of my favourites and there was also Rob Hindmarch and my all time favourite defender Jeff Clarke around at that time too. I was totally gutted when we let him go to the craas (it was said he had knackered knees) as he went on and had another 3 or 4 great years with them.

I went to Wigan this week for my first proper away game in donkeys years (been to pre season tours but they dont count) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thats the MoN effect for you.

I reckon Kevin Arnott would be right up his street as he was a flawed diamond and MoN, like Cloughie before him, likes the challenges afforded by such players.

Mel Holden(RIP) & Bob Lee, similar era - imagine the good/bad debate you could have with that pair.

Joe Bolton & Micky Henderson were also from that era, Ray Train, Roy Greenwood(he used to lodge in Dovedale Road opposite Fulwell Methodist Church) - Arnott was something special though, composed on the ball, accurate passing and a canny shot.

Played cricket too I believe and used to see him in the Swan at Heworth.

Jeff Clarke fantastic. What is odd is that all of those players you could meet in your local and would not blink an eye. Can you imagine popping into the pub now and seeing Bentner or Sessegnon popping up the bar.
I like you lived Sunderland home and away but ity only lasted 5 or 6 years until I got married ( my fault for marrying into a B&W family).
I remember geting a lift home home from Liverpool in my mates beetle and I think we got a point last game of the season to avoid relegation. It was like we had won the cup. No idea what year that was but vivid memories. I also remember being in the main stand at ManU when we scored 5 minues from time. We were the only ones jumping up and down like idiots.
    Those were the days.
Now if I get to 3 or 4 games a season I am happy.
