His career went downhill fast after leaving us. Think he ended up playing non league and is now working for Aldershot!
That was my first match too! With my Dad at the Milton Road end. Your story beats mine though TSS. I had to commute from Andover for every match, so my pocket money didn't stretch as far as yours!
My first game was the penultimate game at the Dell vs Man Yoo, we beat them 2-1 with Wes Brown scoring an OG. We couldn't get tickets for the home end so had to sit (or stand, rather) with the Essex boys. Made it interesting when Saints scored...!!!
most saints of that era went down hill after leaving us. can think of only two exceptions Shearer and Flowers.
Carlton Palmer getting sent-off against Fulham. And then seeing Di Canio push over that exact referee (Paul Alcock) about a fortnight later.
Don't remember much but Southampton 2 Rotherham 3 on Wednesday September 10th 1952. I was 6yo and was smitten by the whole thing. Can remember that the freezing cold weather didn't spoil the night.
I was told that i was taken to my first game aged 5 but I have no memory of this at all. I do have vague memories of seeing the FA Cup parade age 6. Thre first game I actually remember was against Watford and we stuffed them 4-0 in the league cup that must have been around 1980 because we got stuffed 7-1 in the return leg.
Hey, I was 18 and I was at that game ! Didn`t Wilkins score with a 20-yarder at the Archers end ? (memory maybe playing tricks.) My first game was a few weeks earlier against Blackburn - we won 2-1 if I recall. Happy days !
A wet and cold night at Highfield Road when I saw us lose despite Derek Reeves score. But as other posters have said,I was bitten! Is the current Reeves any relation, does anyone know?
Like Beddytare, my first football experience was at Fratton Park. I was bored. Then a kind uncle took me to the Dell to see Saints win 5-1 in a 3rd Div South game and that was me hooked. The year? 1951 I think. I took my granddaughter to see Saints v Leeds at the start of this season and she was spellbound. It's those stripes, you know!
The day I got tickets for my first saints game, my mum took me to the club shop on the bottom of Milton Road, bought me a pay of Saints goalie gloves and a football and a tickets to watch Saints play QPR in...94/95 (We won 2-1). Having lived near the Dell for most of my life I always enjoyed seeing all the fans around the Polygon on match days and running over the road to get a programme outside the church before I even went to a game, so thats a nice early memory too.
1988 v villa at the dell. 3-1 win. We were riding high in the table at that point. First proper memory was when I went in player lounge after a game must have been 89/90 and I sat on shearers knee as well as ruddocks and still have the photos. I remember asking shearer if le tiss was coming and he sent Dodd to run down to dressing room to check if he was still there. I was quite lucky as my uncle was best mates with big kev moore.. Good times.
1980 v wolves won 4-2, Milton Road End, night game remember walking in with my dad and seeing the pitch lit up! Amazing, went to same fixture following season and won 4-1. Been going pretty much ever since until i moved down under last year!! We won the first 6 games that i went too! COYS
Late 60's or early 70's, I can't remember the exact year except the result was Saints 1-0 Liverpool, a late own goal by I think Alec Lindsay, all I remember of that occasion.
Mine must have been around 1988 against Everton. The only thing I remember about it was I was sat with my Dad near the home end in the junior saints section near the goal and the language was brilliant. Glen Cockerill was having a shocker that day and so I decided to join in the fruitful language when he got subbed but everyone went quiet when I stood up and bellowed 'about f*cking time too!!!!' Everyone laughed except my dad and needless to say I got a propper beating when I got home! Can't really remember anything about the game such as the score so that tells me it wasn't a cracking match Good times though!!!!
