The Number 9 was always going to be a hard act to follow after Shearer left, and no one will wear it with the same pride and skill again, and no one will score that many goals again in my opinion.

I personally think the no.9 left this club when Shearer did. Martins and Carroll made a mockery of it in my opinion, so it seems to be a poisoned chalice but Cisse has the chance to turn it round again.

However, for me, it doesn't have the same spark. When you saw Shearer 9, it was an amazing sight and meant a lot, however it doesn't and won't have the same affect on any other player.

I'm glad Cisse has been told about the shirt, but I hope too much pressure isn't put on him. For me, we are a fantastic squad, the shirt number doesn't bother me one bit.

Here here! totally agree, can't get on the guy's back if he's a little slow off the mark just because he's got the 9 on.

We cant expect anymore from him just because he has the #9. He has the talent to be the best since Shearer, hopefully he fulfills that and can restore some pride to the shirt.

I just think it left with Alan Shearer, all it's meaning etc... Now it's just a squad number. However, ask me again in 8 years time when Cisse has 207 goals.

I don't even think it was the goals that gave the #9 it's meaning, it was the passion and pride that Shearer had for NUFC and he would do his upmost for the club to succeed. For me I don't believe any modern day footballer can reproduce that as it is all about the money.

This just about sums it up.

Shearer had watched the Toon since he was a kid and understood what the #9 meant from an early age and when he came here to play he wore the shirt with pride.

    100% agree with these.

Shearer was unique and doubt we will see another one like him.

Number 9 still means a lot to me... I tend to leave it free on Football Manager.

It certainly gives Cisse a huge chance to become a legend if he performs well

If he doesn't score a hat-trick in every match from his debut to the seasons end... I'll be mighty miffed!

I think its your age Leazes, you won't remember anyone pre Shearer. I'm not an awful lot older, but I do remember the likes of Mickey Quinn, who was a decent servant but no world beater.

The important thing is to ensure we don't build it up to the extent that no one has a chance of attaining its lofty standards (yeah, so to get it you have to be as good as the Premierships leading goalscorer, our record holder and one of Englands greatest forwards. Best of luck...). It's the player that matters, not the shirt so I've no issue whatsoever in giving it to Cisse, especially with Ba not wanting it.
