Totally agree. I think signing one of these two not only shows the outside world that we mean business, but it will really make our promotion rivals stand up and worry. I'm not convinced that signing a Lukas or a Sordell would do that, even though they would still improve us (indeed, Lukas moving to Boro doesn't worry me)

Yes know what you mean, Sordell and Lukas dont really do it for me, although Lukas would have been good back up for Rickie.

    I agree with the price

I may be wrong but I think you only have to have 8 homegrown players and these can include foreign players that have played in this country for 3 years before turning 21 (I think). Any players under 21 do not count towards you're 25 man squad. Again I haven't looked this up but I think that's right.

I'm not against signing either player far from it, I would be very please with either. Just at the right price but if Adkins thinks they are worth the risk then I'm behind him 100%. He hasn't done bad so far has he

We sold Chamberlain for £12 million and add ons and so must except that signing someone of similar ilk is going to set us back a huge fee. I didn't see much of Rhodes last season, but I only went to the homes games which were both thumping victories. His goal record is impressive but Udders are too wealthy a club for that level and won't give him up cheaply. I think for the price he is not worth it.

No such rule exists, and in any case Rhodes is a full Scottish international.

Uk players/ English players same thing there are very few really good younger players. Hence why the prices are high. The rule is either coming into force or being changed.

Nationality doesn't come into it. The term "homegrown players" refers to them coming through your youth system or one in your country for 3 years before their 21st birthday, it makes no reference to the actual nationality of the players.

There was talk of it tho wasn't there?, prehaps it may come into force in the future?. I know platini was looking into having a certain number of players that are born in your country in your team. It got held up as people were saying it goes against a EU rule. But i'm sure they will look at it again.

It goes against EU law, UEFA can look at it all they want but they won't be able to change it.

In any case, the academy can produce lots of homegrown players for Saints with Cortese wanting a high % in the first team in years to come.
