Football in its true sense was diagonsed with a terminal illness (money) back in 1992 when the Premier League was formed - Unfortunately all we have now is a game where "money" is the main focus and passion and pride in the main seem to be distant memories. Oh for the good old games of blood, guts and tears - oh and not forgetting "enjoyment".
In five years time "Football" will be played on a Football manager computer programme, with live TV games just simulations of what someone has typed in. Sport? Ha, ha.
A reminder of what it's all really about.... http://www.not606.com/content.php/823-QPR-Football-The-Life-and-Times-of-Dave-Normal
Great post. I blame Sky and the FA that have seen to it that all the values and traditions have been killed off. FA sold out to Sky and since then the money generated via Sky and therefore UEFA have seen to it that the teams at the top stay at the top. Those that slate City and to a lesser extent Chelsea should look to that as the reason why foreign owners come to these clubs and spend huge money. In my eyes it is just levelling the playing field. Money generated through Sky, UEFA in my book isn't any more or less "earned" then having it pumped in via a wealthy owner. The "only way" you can compete with the likes of United and Arsenal is by having huge investment. Teams like Wolves, Everton, WBA etc on shoestring budgets will never challenge the top without investment and it is the same on all levels. Owners are now going to big Championship clubs in hope of taking them up and doing the same thing.
Sky killed it, wages spiralled our of control and at least 90% of the clubs income went to players who forget theyve bought a porsche and the parasitic agents, the bosman ruling didint help either. I hope theres a Euro league where the top 4-6 teams bugger off and we are left with a league with a salary and ticket price cap where everyone competitive.
This is not just a football thing - all 4 major spectator sports in North America (if ice hockey can be so considered) have a simlar problem. and I blame television deals I don't know if a salary cap is the answer either. Our football does have a form of salary cap but there are exceptions permitted else Henry and Beckham wouldn't play here.
agree with comments below... playing for the shirt thats what is missing Football in its true sense was diagonsed with a terminal illness (money) back in 1992 when the Premier League was formed - Unfortunately all we have now is a game where "money" is the main focus and passion and pride in the main seem to be distant memories. Us 'Oldies' who grew up with football in the 60s remember the way the game was played and the characters in the game. We could relate to it, how many times would you see Stan at the greyhound meetings or the bookies? It was our game. The biggest irony is in those days the team shirts didn't have a badge or anything other than the number on it, today these mercenaries are always kissing the badge and then buggering off when the next bigger offer for their services arrive...
Good comments - Shame how the game has changed, but still we are all obviously still watching and so it just shows how addictive it is - lets keep our fingers crossed for the team this year and who knows what will happen in the future
