    My thoughts entirely C!

Even if he doesn't make the grade we could surely loan him out to some L2 side where he'd probably score a few then sell him on for a small loss/profit, it's a no brainer for me tbh

With all due respect to Liam Hearn we are talking about a guy whose zenith in playing terms is Grimsby Town. He's 26, at the peak of his powers. And after 9 years on the scene, and scoring a ****load of goals for Alfreton, he's snapped up by Grimsby for £30k.

Get real lads, we are trying to reach the Premier League here. I'm sure he's a great bloke, but I can't help thinking that if he was a real talent he'd have been lured away to a major force in English football like Northampton, Dagenham & Redbridge, or even Bradford City (dizzy heights).

This guy is more of a Leicester City player - we should be looking for a potential Premiership player in his Teens (like Josh King) or a Quality, proven, experienced striker (like James Beattie or Kevin Davies)

    Don't you think?

I agree that his career could go one of two ways, but you only have to look at Rickie Lambert to know that league level doesn't always inhibit your potential. Lambert was playing in League 2 for years with Bristol Rovers (and an ill fated League 1 campaign) and was the top scorer a few years running. He moved to Southampton for £1m and continued scoring; he's the top scorer in our league, probably would have scored more was he not suspended for 3 games a few weeks ago.

With Hearn, he pretty much brought Alfreton to the Conference and has continued scoring for Grimsby. Now, if we wait for him to move to a league club and he continues scoring goals, his price tag will probably become closer to a seven figure sum, when now we could get him for around half that if we're shrewd enough. I'm not sure loaning him to Grimsby is a good idea, if we sign him now and then go up, he would probably need to prove himself in the CCC. Then if we got promoted, he could play a few games and if he didn't cut it, then loan him out perhaps. The lad definitley scores goals, has age on his side and has a low price tag. I would have thought he's caught the eye of NB, not to mention a fair few other managers, plus with Conor Townsend being there we have an extra set of eyes on him. A move to us might appeal as he wouldn't have to move far, or at all if he wanted to.

Our transfer targets all seem to be PL players, however, which is fine because that's what you want to take you up. But, in order for us to be a PL club we need to get there and despite signing a striker on loan, we still look way short of being a goal threat. If you don't score goals, you don't win games. It'd be remiss of me to think that the way we are playing at the minute would take us up, we just don't score enough goals and winning 1-0 probably won't last forever. We rely a little to heavily on Stewart and Brady on the wings, which is fine against bottom half clubs, but the teams in the top half seemed to have Stewart doubled up (evident against Reading) and it means the strikers are somewhat starved of service. A solid goalscorer should be able to create chances for himself (for those of you that watch any SPL games, Fran Sandaza at St. Johnstone is a fine example of this), something which we don't see Fryatt or McLean doing, but Grimsby fans see Liam Hearn doing week in week out.

VERDICT: At the price Grimsby will ask for, it'd be a worthy gamble. The lad has pace, goals and a good footballing brain, which I think NB would admire being an attacking player himself. Barmby said players coming in would have to improve the squad and be available at the right price, while also fitting into our system. For me, Hearn ticks all those boxes. Whether a bid comes in remains to be seen, but I think the game against Crawley, where the fringe players will get more of a shout, will show how much depth the squad has and if we still look a bit bare up top, I would think NB will be making calls on those last few days.

I take your point, and agree that at £50K or so he may be worth a punt, but..................... and it's a big but, would you be happy if he was our only striker purchase in this transfer window? I can hear the squeals of outrage and gnashing of teeth from my fellow Tigers already.

So, yeah, give the lad a whirl, but don't expect anything from him and don't sell him to the fans as a prospective saviour. Lets be honest, we've spent a lot more on players who are, for whatever reason, much further up the ratings and they've been ****e (Manucho, Folan, Adebola) etc. question is:-

Who would the manager of Grimsby have if he could pick from Folan, Manucho, Adebola, or Hearn? My guess is it might be in that order (God Help Him).

Well at the minute, I don't think he'd leave Hearn out of the side for many players, not least the three you've mentioned. He might take Manucho, his fortunes have improved somewhat since he left England. Also, Adebola didn't cost us anything, so he would have been cheaper than Hearn, who's asking price is around the 500k mark.

I don't think any signings by Barmby would be lauded as 'saviours' so to speak, that's far too much pressure on any player. But yes, I'd be happy if he was the only other striker we brought in during the transfer window, rather that than the January windows of old, which until last year only brought in "experienced players".

Do you know what price Grimsby will ask for?

As the general consensus is £4-500k(at least it's what Ipswich are supposed to be bidding) and that's not all that cheap for an untested player.

In addition, I've seen a post from someone today(that's seen him play regularly), who thinks he's a good natural finisher, but is fairly slow, not fit enough and is probably not good enough to play above League One. I've never actually seen him play(as far as I'm aware), so I've no idea if he's ****e or brilliant, he can certainly score plenty of goals at non league level, but I don't think for one minute that he's available for £50k, nor do I think it's likely that he'll be the next Wayne Rooney.

Just seen OLM's comments. You can have him but I want a 25% sell on clause in there. That's two bites of the Chip Butty and a swig of the Fanta.

I don't know the exact figure, but given his value to the club, his ability and his potential, I'd wager at about £375k to £500k, with add ons. I don't think Grimsby need to sell, as far as I'm aware they aren't in financial difficulty. From what I've heard he could certainly cut it at Championship level, but Grimsby will only sell on if the move is right.
