when i lived near bristol, i had several nice country pubs i visited, the lamb at iron acton and the black horse at hambrook, sadly closed years ago. my nearest pub was the white lion? on frenchay common, but did not rate it. when working in bristol there were some great pubs to visit. the plimsoll bar in the grand hotel which i christened the winchester club, after minder, the commercial rooms in corn st and we used to go to a little real ale pub near broad weir baths. did it succumbe to the rebuilding down there. anyway some nice pubs in and around bristol
AJ - I was brought up in Frenchay and frequented both the White Lion and the Hambook pubs. And you're right about the Plimsoll - just like the Winchester in Minder.
I lived in frenchay for several years and went in the white lion on the common, and it wasn't a bad boozer. AJ, you sure you aint gas through and through???? Lived in Bristol, watched the gas, knows more about the history of rovers than almost all of us on here...loves the old skool players 100% gashead, just admit it AJ
aj was born in shrewsbury at the hight of the battle of britain and have always been a shrews supporter . but in my 1958 school diary i notice has gas results and city, probably because my parents moved to bristol and after a brief spell on the downs moved to riverwood rd frenchay. and as i have said for about 10 years i alternately used to watch games at eastville, and ashton gate, and before that i watched the downs league, retainers, willmott sprts, clifton st vincent etc. apart from all this aj is has and always will be a shrew, however i may have a pang of regret when the shrews 3rd goal goes in on 14.2.12. floreat salopia
Small world AJ. I was brought up in Park Crescent on Riverwood, Frenchay. You must have moved in when those houses were virtually new - I think they were built in the 50s.
sorry 3 bed detached, round the corner near the village hall is grove bank and there lived the late great bert tann, a great friend.
27 Park Cres, bought £24k in 1978, sold in 1989 for £200k - house inflation eh! Grove Bank is in Riverwood. You're thinking of Grange Park round by the village hall. I didn't know that Bert Tann lived there - you knew him did you? Fantastic!
yes sorry grange park. yes i knew bert tann, not through football, but through serving on village hall committees etc. we had a bit of banter when shrews were due to play gas. he lived in grange park for ages and was a good manager. i left park crescent in 1970 but was very friendly with bob and pat horwood who lived near you. he was into vintage cars.
He was a great manager. My parents new the Horwoods very well - I was 9 when i moved to Park Cres in 1978, so I can't remember them clearly. My Dad served on the village hall committee and also ran the snooker club in the shack next to the hall. Blimey what a small, small world. I still go back there for a walk across the Common from time to time and my first dog is buried next to that large stone surrounded by the five trees on the hilly part of the Common. Frenchay is a great place to live.
