Thought it was your parents that organised those parties.

This seems like a sensible place to ask..

Crouching Shola, am I right in saying you lecture at UCLan? If so, what's Lancaster like as a place for students? :)

You lecture at UCLan? I did my journalism MA there, really enjoyed it. Great course, great tutors.

Just got back from work actually. I've recently moved and lecture at a college which has UCLan affiliation, so I still work for them, just contracted through the college rather than the university itself. It's a great university (although you could perceive this as bias if you were a cynic). You are aware that UCLan is in Preston though aren't you?

Glad you enjoyed it mate. It's a rapidly growing university as well. It's always nice to hear that people appreciate the work that goes into the teaching, as opposed to the usual cliched and naive responses to teachers/lecturers and the amount of work they do.

I've applied to Lancaster, UCLan didn't offer the course I wanted to do, but I heard somewhere that UCLan have shared facilities with Lancaster or something? It might be wrong, and it was a long shot but I just thought I'd get an opinion on what the place was like in general :)

People think that teachers don't do any work? Really?

Maybe it's because about 8 or so members of my family are teachers/lecturers/headteachers but I've always thought it was one of the most work heavy jobs and a job that cuts into your personal life far more than others.

This, too. For a secondary school teacher, for example, as well as spending a whole day dealing with people who don't want to be in your lessons you have marking and planning when you get home. You can't just switch off at the end of the day.

I assure you it does, especially depending on the subject you teach. English is a very intense subject with regards to marking, and I spend most of my spare time either doing that or planning. It always annoys me when the 'holidays' thing gets thrown your way. I can assure you that I spend a minimal proportion of my holidays actually relaxing.

With regards to Lancaster, a lot of my friends studied there and they really enjoyed it. It seemed like a very campus based social life though, as Lancaster itself isn't that big. That can be a good thing though.

Yeah, my old man is a headteacher and spends about a week, maximum two weeks of his summer break actually not doing anything (though regularly thinking about & discussing work still). Seen him working on Christmas Day once or twice and Easter is no different. I'm honestly very shocked that anybody would actually think that teachers/lecturers have it easy. I would probably be spitting blood if somebody said that in my presence and I'm not even a teacher <laugh>.
