He is when you look at their poachers instinct. They'll score goals for anyone though rely on confidence.

I can only remember him having a shocker when we lost to Marseille in the UEFA Cup. Drogba scored twice.

Ba drops deep a lot and collects the ball to run at defenders, actually gets involved in the build up play and is generally just a really good footballer. Think we'll see that a lot more when he's playing with Cisse who will be constantly on the shoulder. Ba and Bent are both obviously good goalscorers but that is where the similarities end.

He was a central midfielder who when he was actually given a game was forced to play on the left hand side where he wasn't comfortable, very talented player who never got a fair crack of the whip here in my opinion - although on the other hand he hasn't set the world on fire since. Who knows how good he could have become if things could have went differently for him during his development here, he was one of Europe's top prospects.

I remember the game they all had a shocker that night, if he only had one shocker why were fans booing at the Wolves game (last home game of the 03/04 game)? Mind you the support that day was the worst I've seen from Newcastle fans.

This. Ba's the complete package, Bent's just has clever movement complimented by his pace and that's it.

Knew that there was people who were 16 or 17, didn't realise you were younger. So you missed the Keegan years and the vast majority of the Robson years. This year must be the best one you've had supporting the toon.

Yeah, I only started properly supporting the team after relegation. The first game I ever saw of Newcastle was an FA Cup match vs Hayes and Yeading, 2002 I think that was. Robert was playing, and I saw my name on the TV, so started supporting them.

That was 2005 under Souness, Robert may have been playing in the game, can't remember the exact team for the game.

I can see similarities in the way he plays on the shoulder of the last man, has similar physical attributes, and has that knack of stealing a yard on defenders.

Right, a bit of formation porn.

With Guthrie having proved a pleasant surprise and HBA someone we all would like to see come good, what does anyone think about the following front 6 for games when we want to attack:

    HBA - Ba - Cisse

    Cabaye - Tiote - Guthrie

Three dangerous goal scorers up front,
Three midfielders who can tackle and play in a pass, two of who can hit the odd long range strike themselves (three, if we assume Tiote's against Arsenal wasn't a one off)

In this situation I'd consider playing Santon right back and Ferguson left back to give the width too. But yeah at home I hope to see it at some stage. Certainly when teams come to park the bus.

On the point of Santon, i'm still not convinced he's entirely happy at left-back.

He is right-footed and I still think we're yet to find our best option at left-back - can't really think of anyone who I would really want to be honest.

Leighton Baines from Everton could be done easily enough considering their financial status.

Would be the first choice but highly unlikely. Club would be loathe to lose him before they sold off other assets (Feillani or someone like that). Its one of the reasons Arsenal had so much trouble trying to prise away Jagielka and ended looking elsewhere. When you add to that Baines is a lifelong Everton fan who has already stated he's happy to end his career there, we'd need CL football or some astronomical wage offer. Neither looks likely.

Have to agree. Santon has always been a natural right back anayway and will look a lot better when he shifts across. There just ain't that many top left back knocking about. Look at the Mackems, they've needed one for 3 years and have had to sign Bridge due to the lack of options.
