I go back to Harry Hooper for a similar left winger. Always beat his man and was penalty taker, always sent the goalie the wrong way.

    I remember Mulhall very well.
Excellent close control and cannonball shot.
I recall some electronic research was done about the hardest shot.
I think Lorimer came out top, but Mulhall was really well up in the rankings.

Mulhall succeeded Jack Overfield as our left winger.

George also managed Halifax town for a number of years.

George was also quite feisty ... here's a pic of him getting his marching orders!

I thought Dave Watson looked like he would have made a pretty decent centre forward in the games that I saw him play in that position. However, he took to centre half like a duck to water and the rest is history...

If you watch him closely cest ...its not a trick as such but he does like to let the fullback ger close to him but then very quickly moves the ball with his left foot along the floor in a sort of a flick action that moves the ball away and passed the fullback..this reminds me of Gorden Cowens who did a similar thing but he used to lift the ball over the defenders trailing leg....I do like maclean but he is not simular to tuart i would say more like Billy Hughes.....I do think that macleans speed physique and enthusiasm and engine will... if he continues to improve make him a very valuable asset to our club..if we can keep hold of him!

Dickie Rooks .....a real Sunderland lad born and bread Tudor Grove, Plains Farm....four doors down from me as a kid........ I remember him playing CF once....the old lags at the time said we should play him and Charlie up front....haha cutting edge stuff in those days... He eventually went to Bristol....

Still see George Mulhall in my mid...he had one "cut" he used all the time to beat the usual fullback....very effective ...but strangely although McClean is a lefty I think he`ll develop more two footedly than George....Cant wait for Robbo to get hold of him.....See what you mean about Waddle tho.....great!

Scatty moo - save the maltesers. Watson was a centre half with Rotherham Utd but Alan Brown played him out of position. Stokoe came in andd bought a proper CF in Vic Halom and moved Watson back and slid Richi Pitt to left half. A pairing that did as much as anyone to win us the cup.

Never saw RAW's quote on that one MR - and unfortunately am just too young to remember Tueart - But my Dad said exactly the same and he's been watching SAFC since the 60's!! Only gamne in any competition home or away he missed in 73 was the cup final and that bwas because of a stupid system they had for getting tickets!!

McClean reminds me of a proper winger - hugs the touchline, runs at people, frightens defences. Can kick with both feet - the only thing I would like to see is him getting to the by-line more often but he's only young and I'm pretty sure MoN will be instilling all the right things into him - long may it continue
