Shanghai Shenhua are lining up a surprise move for Stoke City defender Matthew Upson.

The Chinese club, who signed Nicolas Anelka from Chelsea in January, are keen to raid the Premier League again and are locked in talks over possible moves for Didier Drogba and Upson.
Upson's future at Stoke has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks with the England international finding himself down the pecking order at the Britannia Stadium.

The 32-year-old has only made five Premier League starts for Stoke since arriving from West Ham last summer and he was linked with a move to Southampton before the close of the transfer window.

Shenhua official Ma Yue has confirmed talks are ongoing regarding Chelsea striker Drogba and Upson, but has refused to divulge how close the deal is to being done.

"There is nothing confirmed. We are still in the midst of discussions," Yue told Reuters.

It remains to be seen if Stoke boss Tony Pulis would be willing to let Upson leave with the Potters still in the FA Cup and preparing for the resumption of the Europa League this month.

Sgt, I am a bit surprised that Upson has dropped down the pecking order but he certainly has not featured, even on the bench ( I think) in the last few weeks. However with Huth now suspended he may well feature, and you have to ask 'is he worse than Woodgate?' I am baffled sometimes by TP's stubborness eg favouring Woodgate and ignoring Upson - my opinion of course.

I agree PP. Funnily enough when they respectively signed, I was please with Woody signing and less than happy with Upson signing. I think now however I'd say that Upson has had better games than Woody. Woody started well but tailed off sadly. Shame really, as at his best he was one of the best defenders in Europe and the best English centre half in the 15 and a half years I've seen. A fit Jonathan Woodgate would've got into any side in Europe.

Pulis is a stubborn one sadly. I'd love to see Upson play instead of Woody in Huth's absence, but I think we all know it'll be Woody.

Hopefully Upson will take Woodgate, Diao, Delap AND Pulis with him.

    A proper Chinese take away

Normal service resumed at last. After all the vitreol being posted since Saturday it is refreshing to read a humorous comment - thanks ONB (sorry), Portuguese Pulis
