Syd my dad looks into this site....

    Sure he'll appreciate this.....

To me it looks like a scene out of Grease...only in black and white....

Got NME for quite a few years for gigs etc. never rated MM, bit la di da.

Dirty book centre was good for posters, adult art magazines (if you raked about) and meeting mates.
Ling Hong, minging but lovely food just up from the boro.

My daughter still gets NME, it's now in magazine format rather than the newspaper I used to buy.

Never noticed the minging, but agree cracking food.
But I'm talking 1970 on. I never went in there in later years in the 80s.
Licensed as well so could get a drink after the pubs shut during the day. (We used to go round the corner to Harvey's for late night drinks if we weren't going clubbing. Mmm chili burgers!)
There was a few of us were regulars in the Ling Hong, they were wary of us at the start as we were a pretty loud bunch of lads.
Ended up they used us as unofficial bouncers if anyone was getting out of hand. :p

1960s was a great time to be a teenager
    :)

The austerity of the 1950s was fading ... and the revolution against the 'establishment' caught on .....

and we had ... Apache by the Shadows.... Telstar by the Tornados - propah music ... LOL...

    :)

The old New Musical Express has nothing in common with the NME magazine.

I prefered the original. We have got quite a lot of old iconic ones at work because the owner of the venue used to sell them years ago at Glasto and collected them.

Too young to realise at the time about the sixties, but I do know my family went up in the world (buying a house on The Broadway), so I'm assuming my parents wages had risen a great deal, from the austerity of my younger days.
Plus the end of the sixties brought proper music.
    Black Sabbath
    Deep Purple
    Cream
    Pink Floyd

Then the seventies gave us The Bay City Rollers. :emoticon-0118-yawn:

Harvey's was the 70s/80s equivalent of the Glass Spider i.e. open till 5. Had many a decent burger in there.

NME always had more street cred than Sounds or Record Mirror.

Have bought a few albums on the strength of a good review in NME.

NME used to be a guide to musical credibility for me in my late teens... haven't looked at in years and years... which explains quite a lot.

Had a couple of scraps too, some of the lads drinking till early doors clearly couldn't handle it.
It had some of the stroppiest bouncers as well, as I recall, I was in one night when the manager told them to back off with the attitude, manhandling people who weren't even doing anything.

I loved those chilli burgers, homemade huge burger covered in a pile of minced beef chilli. (Mouths watering just thinking of them. ) No way to pick it up needed a knife and fork.

I read a review in there about a Dutch band called Focus must have been 1969, 1970 ish.
They were raving about their guitarist Jan Akermann saying he was brilliant and weird singer!!!
Couldn't find anything about them anywhere, took me ages to get there first LP was well worth the wait though.
Hocus Pocus seemed to be played none stop on the radio.
71 I think they made it big in England then took the world by storm, there music still gets played on loads of TV shows and films.
