A lot going on this year for the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Sadly, amongst most of what you'll see on tv, they won't focus on the impact it had on Southampton.

540 people from Southampton died on the ship, vast majority of them crew members who stayed at their posts and/or assisted the survivors.

There are accounts of schools in St Mary's & Northam having almost half of the children in those schools losing their fathers.

Just imagine the scale of that happening today.

I'm very proud to be from Southampton and god rest the souls of the following Sotonians who perished on the Titanic.

    Nice touch chap.

My great great grandfather is named on that list. I clearly never knew the man, nor really much about him but his legacy will live on.

    Thank you.

I know it was a hollywood blockbuster, but the film just concentrated on the fashionable 'accents' like Irish and Italian, probably for the american audience. It pissed me off all the same.

    Nice touch CBK.

Sadly you have mentioned 3 of my Family in that list I also lost another Who wasn't from Southampton. I believe he was my Grandfathers brother. Unfortunately he did not give us very much information and my own father did not find out this information out until well after he was married to my mother!! Only then because of a death that occured down this way. (My father/Mother and his father lived in Scotland). My father did not even know his dad had had a brother!! This information also was not told to us siblings until just before my father died.

All the deaths were of course tragic. I believe around 80 were Irish. Most first class passengers survived.

I believe ITV are doing a series about the Titanic written by the Downtown Abbey producers. I fear it will only focus on the "glamorous" sorts and the story of the ordinary crew will be airbrushed out of history, much like the Hollywood version.

Made in Belfast, picked up its passengers in Southampton...what were the chances of me having connections? I'm led to believe one of my ancestors helped build the Titanic...

Staggering to see all the names listed like that. Good to remember despite all the fame and interest due to hollywood it was a terrible tradegdy and really hit our city hard.

I think these kind of stats or were being alluded to in the aftermath of Costa Concordia disaster last month; on the BBC website there was a debate as regards where did certain martime etiquette come from.

Great post. As a 17 year old in 1975, I started my career in Soton as a marine engineer cadet. I got off the bus (the No2?) from Winchester Road at the Titanic memorial on my way to college at East Park Terrace every morning. All of the engineers on Titanic died that night, and I often reflect on their plight.
Now my son is 18, he`s a brainwashed Saints fan (tickets sorted for Pompey 07 April - hope their still in business !), and he is a an engineer cadet in South Shields. During our visits to Soton, we always stop by the memorial and reflect. Come on you Saints !

I wondered what some of those jobs were...

Greasers sometimes employed on coal burning ships but mainly on motor (diesel engined) ships to maintain oil reservoirs, routine lubrication and cleaning. Also assist engineers during machinery repair.

Trimmers took coal from the bunkers to the firemen that stoked the furnace. Also, when a ship loaded grain in bulk trimmers were employed to shovel grain into the awkward places in the hold - notably between the top of the feeders and the shell. Even lower in social crew status than the men they served, they bunked and messed separately. 'Trimmers' have always had the dirtiest and the most physically demanding jobs on the ship - the absolute bottom of the engineering hierarchy. Needless to say - they received the lowest pay.
