Harry is the media's hero today, but he'll be their villain, soon enough!

Discussion in 'Tottenham Hotspur' started by Hoddle is a god, Feb 9, 2012.

  1. I'm keeping a scrapbook, into which I am gluing cut-outs of all the paper headlines and stories that are unanimously effusing over Harry's "expected" crowning as England coach; and I am going to fill it with every story that is written about him, during his England tenancy (assuming he is offered, and takes the job, of course).

Harry will, inevitably, fail as England coach. They all do. There have been better managers than him take the job, and all of them have been drummed out of it in disgrace. For poor Harry, he also has all the other traits that many fans already use to beat him with, such as his being a bung-taker, a bankrupter of clubs, a wheeler-dealer, etc, and when his failure comes, irate (non-Spurs) fans will re-use all of those old stones to throw at him, again.

But the most bitter pains will be suffered at the hands of the very media that is currently singing his name - the gutter tabloid press.

I cannot be the only person who is stupefied by the utter nonsense that is currently being published in the name of sports journalism. They are building Harry up to be the Jesus Christ of football. But we all know that hack journos are like the screen-writers of a certain type of cliched Hollywood movie (the kind that generally stars Steven Segal or Jason Stratham), where the villain is built up so as to justify the brutality of his final torture and death, and that the degree to which Harry's name is currently being lauded by these wolves will be excelled only by the degree to which they will turn on him.

And they will turn on him.

When that happens - and it will happen, as sure as night follows day - I want to be armed with my book of cuttings, complete with all the plaudits and put-downs, and the names of the hack journos who write this sh*t and the names of their papers who publish it, so that I can throw it back at them.

You are appointing Harry to the England job, not the FA; they'll do whatever you blackmail them into doing, because they are far too feckless to think for themselves. If he is appointed, you will have got what you have been baying for. Just remember that, when Harry (aged 64 and with a dodgy heart) fails to live up to the impossible expectations of the idiot audience for whom you devises the garbage that you write.

    Here endeth the rant <ok>

I hope you are genuinely doing a scrapbook HIAG, that's a bloody good idea. - you'll have a strong case of "I told you so" in years to come.

cracking article, agree with you 100%. I touched on this slightly in another post, but you've taken it to another level!

It's times like this that I really hope these forums get read by people associated with the club/players/staff, just so the opinions of us outsiders can be taken on board. - we can all hope, eh?

    Fair play to you.

A blog on here might be easier. Or a blog somewhere else. Or a G+ page... Cutting and glueing? *hehe*

Google's your friend. I get Google to email me when certain people make the news (non-football) e.g. http://www.google.co.uk/alerts?t=1&q=harry redknapp&hl=en

I hate the media just as much as you. Don't let them get you down. They've been a bit giddy today.

I said months ago that the treatment handed out by the media would be the thing that stopped Harry from taking the job. The reason we have not and will not win anything has had nothing to do with the manager. It is more to do with grass roots of the game and the development of young talent and the amount of foreign players in our teams and our academies. It is a numbers game and ours, even though we have a large population, don't add up. Our pool of talent is too small. The Premiership has blurred the focus on the International side too.

The coverage of Harry at the moment as, if he has just won the world cup or has died, is baffling. I hope the FA take a more balanced view than the press. After all is said and done, he hasn't really got that much to show for 28 years as a manager. Don't get me wrong, I am completely happy with what he has done for us, but at the moment he is being portrayed as Bob Paisley SAF and Mourhino all rolled into one. This level of expectation will lead only to disappointment and as HIAG says "H" getting a proper shoeing (such that he probably won't work again) from the media when things go tits-up.

  18. Taken from the BBC Football web-page, this morning:-

"Keep up to date with all the latest developments as the search for a new England manager begins in earnest."

This is inscribed below a photo of Harry <doh>

So, what the BBC really means is, "Keep up to date with all the latest developments as we and the scum tabloid press and other assorted hack journos continue to pile the pressure on Harry Redknapp to abandon Spurs and take up the England post."
