Yeah I guess I was being quite harsh making that statement its just I feel so disheartened with the whole England set up.

But I remember when a world cup or a euro's were coming around I used to count down the days with excitement I had a belief that we would win they used to be more important than the domestic season and now all of that has gone and will take a lot to change it back again.

I agree with PompeyLapras and Dan, Hiddink is the best man for me. He has lots of experience managing national sides, plays attractive attacking football, speaks good English and has managed to take average sides far in competitions, sounds perfect...

This. Harry has no experience with managing at international level, and to be honest has very little experience of winning anything.

The average sides he has done well with have all been pretty tight groups.
The problem with our average lot is, they don't think they are average & theres plenty of little groups in the squad.
He's a worthwhile appointment, but I think we need a quick fix just for the Euro's. This tournament will end a lot of England careers very quickly.

I think Hughton should be England manager, yes I know he hasn't done much manager wise. But I just have this feeling he will be a good England manager.

Being a failed England manager is terrible for a manager's reputation as well as being a confidence killer. I can't remember the last one who held down a decent job afterwards. With the job's history, especially it's recent history, I can't see anyone mindful of their managerial future wanting the job. That basically rules out anyone under 60, which includes the special one. There will no doubt be a fair few dinosaurs amongst the old guard of managers and the foreign ones are unlikely to want to change their ways which may be inappropriate in our culture.

    John Terry won't allow it.

As far as I can see, the main bad point about Harry is that he will fall into the chums trap - where he doesn't drop the core players, even when they're off-form and over-the-hill. On the positive side, he has experience of doing well on the European stage, beating much more experienced opposition pretty efficiently in that case; working with super-inflated egos; and his choice of players is pretty good, given the talent he has at his disposal; and he won't be anywhere near a transfer fee.

I'd love Hiddink too, but I think we can do worse than try Harry. Be good to shorten the length of the contract too, in case it doesn't work out - though he knows he has a lot of strength in the bargain here, and so can probably name his terms pretty nicely. I know Saints fans largely hate him cos of what he did to us, but if you take that out of the equation, you surely can't deny he's a strong contender?

Whoever gets the job will inherit a poisoned Chalice, before he has sat down at his desk, the red tops will searching for skeletons in the cupboard, any tiny little scandal will be used to make headlines in an attempt to sell their trashy newspapers. Also any new England manager will have his work cut out to win hearts and minds of an increasingly critical and impatient fanbase who have been starved of success since 1966. Whatever the wages it won't compensate for the sheer misery that could be lumped on the new incumbent, good luck to whoever it is, but I fear for Harrys health if he choses to go for it. Mourinho would be the hardest man to shift if he got his feet under the desk. I would rather have British but not sure any of the candidates are good enough.

But, bear in mind, he picks his clubs very carefully to make sure he has a good chance of doing so. Let's face it, he isn't going to be the next manager of Wrexham, to take them through to the CL.

I just don't see Harry as a good manager, yes he has had success. But that success has been brought by a hell of alot of money. Moyes has done far more with far less money then Arry.

That's true, but with the national job, you get these players for free. So it's the equivalent of having ****loads of money spent on a squad. Loads of moeny just buys you good players - it's what you do with those players that gets the results. There are countless managers who don't perform with those resources. Harry has actually proven that he can perform with those resources.

I don't for a minute think he's the best manager for the job, just that it somehow seems right. The last of his "type" (and yes, I do of course know Venables was a cut above in every way) was a bit of a success. I just think the time is right - there can't be any more skeletons the press haven't uncovered of his already; he's lives most of his life in the press already; and in no way craves privacy. Surely he must also want to retire with some silverware other than an FA Cup and Intertoto, which provides the requisite drive?

Good sirs of this forum, I cannot stress enough the strong feeling that I possess that Harry Redknapp should not become future manager of England. He is English, yes, but he bankrupted us and I think he's overated, plus our FA Cup win was soooooo flukey.

    Guus Hiddink for England! Woo!
