GHANA STRIKER ASAMOAH GYAN RETIRES FROM INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL 'INDEFINITELY'
    Feb 18, 2012 3

End of the road. Gyan has announced his decision to retire from international football...for now.

It is our understand the Al Ain star sent a letter to the Ghanaian Football Association late on Friday night informing them of his decision, which had the "full support of familty and friends".

The 26-year-old, who has been capped 59 times by his country, has cited the "intolerable" abuse he has been subjected to following the Black Stars exit from the recent African Cup of Nations.

Gyan has become public enemy No.1 in his homeland after missing a crucial penalty in Ghana's 1-0 semi-final defeat to Zambia, with many fans holding him responsible for their demise in a competition many had tipped them to win.

To make matters worse Gyan also missed a last minute spot-kick in Ghana's 2010 World Cup quarter-final against Uruguay, a fact not lost on irate fans who took to social networking site Twitter to condemn Gyan for his latest miss.

Gyan has said that is was "not a the decision lightly" to end his international career for the time being as it had been "an incredible honour" to represent his country having made his debut as a 17-year-old in 2003.

The striker, on-loan at Al Ain from Premier League club Sunderland, concludes his letter, according to source at the Ghanaian FA, by stating he will notify the them when, and if, he wishes to return in the future.

Gyan has scored 28 goals in 59 games for his country and netted on his debut against Somalia nine years ago. But he has taken the decision to bow out following the vitriolic abuse he has received after his spot-kick miss.

"I tried to defend @ASAMOAH_GYAN from the time he missed in the WC but this is too much you should retire from the team," wrote one fan shortly after the match. "You let your country down again @ASAMOAH_GYAN," said another.

That is a kick in the head - in more ways than one. If he's not playing in the international team, it'll probably affect his transfer price if we decide to sell. And it reduces his value to us as a marketing asset if we decide to keep him. Either way, Sunderland lose by this. The only way we can win is if he comes back and plays well - reduced market value or not, points are points.

But I suppose it'll be a bit like the Bent thing here - an object of hatred until it dawned on us how much we miss him. Ghana will feel the pinch without a major player. Give it a few games, and it might easily die down. We can only hope so, whichever way you look at it.

Excellent news for us for 2 reasons:

    1) If he comes back and plays for us he doesnt disappear every other year for a couple of months.

    2) For the same reason his sales price has just went up.

I honestly wouldn't have him back. The only way I'd take Gyan back is if he started trying again, towards the end I don't think he could care less. I doubt he wants to come back anyway.

Thought he had to be playing for his country to get a work visa for the UK so could Bugger it up for him coming back here and any potential price we get for home.

He's a reet ****ing bell end.

I hope the Arabs hand over another £7million so we have our money back (or more...ideally) and put this one down to experience.

His mentality is way, way, way below the requirements of a top footballer, I can see him being washed up by 30.

I think maybe his original visa still stands because he's never stopped being a Sunderland player.

As it says he will retire.... for now.

It depends on what 'for now' means. It will probably be until the next squad is announced.

His mental attitude is awful to say the least, if he had the quality to back it up with then fair enough but he's nothing more than an average player with a huge ego and a 'reputation' among the media.

With some of the suggestions going about corruption being rife in Ghanaian football - was the missed penalty for the benefit of people who wanted a certain result. Why let him take pens after his world cup miss from the spot?
