I was 10 when we got our house phone in, just before the first ceasefire. I was one of the wealthier kids in my class because I had two parents, so wealthy in fact that I didn't qualify to get a free trip to America every summer. All the slightly poorer deprived Belfast kids used to get all expenses paid trips to the US as some sort of charity thing from Irish America. My first foreign holiday was Santa Ponsa when I was 12!
I went on a school trip to Liverpool at 12, I remember putting a can of Cherry Pepsi in the Hotel elevator door to squash it.... My drama teacher went in afterwards and was stuck inside for 5 hrs after the Pepsi shorted out the lift.... We were unsupervised and just strolled off down the City.... Happy days.....
I said I was one of the 'wealthier' kids in my class which was basically because I had two parents - but to answer your question, no we didn't get a phone in our house until 1994 - and where I came from that wasn't unusual either.
